“Oh—I mean, I don’t know, but—can I meet her?” She sounds so giddy, so sweet, and I can’t help but smile.
“Of course, she’s all yours. Though maybe not tonight.”
She takes me in like she’s seeing me for the first time. Interesting; usually people notice what I look like first. “Oh, um, where are you going? You look … nice.”
“Arjun invited me to Dean Shea’s dinner club.”
“What?” Her mouth hangs open.
“Yes, and?”
“It’s just, that’s usually very hard to get an invitation to. How … did you do that? You—” Lacie claps her mouth shut. She scrambles to her feet, her papers ruffling. “I—I hope you have a good time. I’m tired. Good night, Marcella.”
She slams the door behind her.
Hm. Interesting.
I tap-tap downstairs in my pretty gold heels, gathering my black peacoat around my body. Arjun is already waiting in the turnaround lane. He whistles when I smile at him.
“Wow. You clean up nice.” He stops, his face freezing. “Oh— I mean—”
I grin at him. “Thank you, Arjun.” He opens the door for me and I slide into the car. “Such a gentleman.”
And while it’s true that I’m excited for this dinner club, I have to admit I’m more excited for dessert.
The sweeter they are, the sweeter they taste.

Lacie: See you at the Perk on Tues?
Laurel: Sure thing. I need help with Gawain I think
Laurel: Middle High is such a dick
Lacie: Absolutely, no problem. I’ll bring my copy and maybe a dictionary?
Laurel: Sounds good! 4pm?
Lacie: Yep!
