“Lucky, he gets the point,” I said, which drew him to a stop.

“Not sure he does,” Eddie said. “Are you okay, Eva?”

I waved a hand. “I’m fine.”

Keith wouldn’t ever hurt me. I knew that as deeply as I’d known anything in my life.

But the pain in his eyes, the anger and vitriol that spewed from his words—I didn’t know this version of Keith.

After getting my clothes from the cleaner’s, Eddie, Lucky, and I walked back to the truck parked in front of the feed store.

“Hey guys?” I asked as we piled into the cab.

“Yeah, Eva?” Eddie said.

“Do me a favor and don’t tell Warren about this.”

Eddie and Lucky exchanged a glance but kept silent.

Warren

“She’s a mess, boss.” Eddie’s voice crackled over the phone line. “Won’t ride, haven’t seen her eat anything other than coffee. She’s running herself into the ground.”

I pushed aside a stack of files on the desk in front of me. In the past week and a half of this new life of mine, it had been all fancy dinners, giving speeches, and reading endless briefs from my staff. Kenneth had set everything up for me to jump right into the campaign.

The updates from Eddie had hurt worst of all.

“Today she . . .” Eddie whistled. “Well, never mind.”

“If you don’t tell me, I’ll call Lucky and ask him.”

Eddie sighed. “Keith cornered her in town.”

“What?” I stood up, knocking a stack of files onto the floor.

“To be honest, I think she was the one antagonizing him.”

That didn’t make me feel any better. “Any sign of trouble on the property?”

“Nothing. I think it all died with Victor.”

“She still trying to get the guys to find new jobs?”

“Yeah. She’s wearing some of them down too.”

“I’ll deal with this after nationals,” I growled.

A knock echoed on my door, and I hung up the phone. Reid walked in, Kenneth on his heels.

“I’ve got to hear this,” Kenneth was saying.

I rubbed my face, putting aside Eddie’s words about Eva. The truth was, I hadn’t been flying high in the past few weeks either. I missed her something awful.

I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat. I couldn’t hide my foul mood from the campaign team either.

At least in eight days I’d see her again.

Now I needed to know what Reid had dug up. Would it put to rest the biggest threat that Eva still faced?
