Our Dark Incantations

Begrudgingly, she changed into the preselected outfit and they coin traveled to Kane Harrington’s house—correction: mansion.

They landed in a large room with marble flooring and expensive furniture. Harrington’s mansion was quite different from Dawson’s. It looked warmer and more inviting. Less like a castle and more an actual home to someone. Someone filthy rich, that is. Tasteful art hung on the walls, and the vast book collection would put most libraries to shame.

Harrington jumped up from the couch and pulled Amelia in for a kiss.

“I’d say get a room,” a voice behind them announced, “but this is your house.”

The voice belonged to a young man with short, dark hair and deep hazel eyes, who smiled at Mira with perfect teeth.

“I’m Evren Bradford.”

He wore a heavy wool coat and an elaborately tied cravat.

“Where are my manners?” Harrington brushed his thick hazel hair carelessly to the side, and his bright green eyes sparkled with wickedness. “Welcome to the dark side, Winters. I’m Kane Harrington.”

“Thanks for having me,” Mira responded, hugging her arms around herself tighter.

“So…you’re the Caster with a Shadowflame,” he said with a grin.

“That would be me.”

“Fascinating.” Harrington untangled himself from his girlfriend. “Goldwine?” he asked Mira.

She couldn’t recall the last time she’d had Goldwine. Not only was it far too expensive for her budget, but it also was usually meant for special occasions only. For celebrations. It felt sacrilegious to have one on a regular evening, but the three Wielders sipped from their crystal flutes as if it was the most natural thing to do.

Harrington pulled the bottle out of a bucket of ice, and Mira nodded. She didn’t want to stick out more than she already did.

“What do you think so far?” Harrington handed her the crystal glass full of bubbly wine.

“About what?”

He gestured around him.

“Oh, it’s a beautiful house…or mansion.”

“It’s better than Dawson’s estate, right?”

Evren shook his head and Amelia groaned. “Not this again.”

“Shh, let her decide,” Harrington said.

“Bold of you to assume she’s been to Dawson’s,” Evren said.

Amelia swung her legs over and sat up on her knees, fixing Mira with a wide grin. “Oh, I bet she’s been to the estate.”

Mira blushed and took a big sip of the Goldwine. The bubbles danced on her tongue, but she couldn’t appreciate its taste with the eyes of the Wielders on her.

“I’ll take that bet,” Evren said.

Spheres, they were going to think she had been to Dawson’s home for other reasons.

Mira stared at the intricate design on her crystal Goldwine flute, avoiding any eye contact with Dawson’s friends. “I have been to the estate.”

“Told you,” Amelia said with satisfaction as Harrington plopped back on the sofa next to her.

“With that out of the way, back to my question. Which do you like better? We all know Dawson’s estate looks like an abandoned museum.”

“Darling,” Amelia purred, combing her hand through his hair. “You’re just jealous because the Dawson estate is about four rooms and two bathrooms larger.”
