Our Dark Incantations

Expensive antique furniture was tastefully arranged. Fresh flowers sat in a vase. Dawson probably had housekeepers make sure the place looked like this even when he wasn’t present.

“This is beautiful,” Mira gasped.

“I forgot you don’t remember it.”

The marble floor was shined to perfection. Slowly, they walked through different rooms, and then they stepped into the library. “Spheres, this is amazing,” Mira said as her hands traveled along the books on the shelves.

“Yes, yes,” Amelia sighed as she leaned against the wall. “Books. Amazing. Anyway. Your things are probably in the lab? Or his room? I don’t know where you kept your nerdy notes.”

“Let’s start with his room. I want to see if it triggers any memories.”

They walked up the staircase and down a hallway. She peeked into the bathroom, which looked larger than her apartment in Yharvan.

Walking into his bedroom felt intrusive. Mira tried to avoid looking at the large bed with dark green silk bedding. “Feels strange walking through his room, honestly. Like I shouldn’t be doing this.”

Amelia snorted. “Trust me, you were very familiar with his bed.”

Mira flushed with embarrassment. She opened the drawers of his desk, but they held nothing of hers. Dawson’s wardrobe was filled with jackets, waistcoats, and button-down shirts. She stilled at the sight of a black silk dress with a silver dragon on the back.

“Was that…mine?”

“Yes, he had it custom-made for you.”

Against her better judgment, she begged for a memory to come back. But nothing did. Instead, she stared at the life of a stranger.

Downstairs, she found an entire lab, fully stocked with everything one could desire. Not surprising, considering the Dawson heir was stupid rich.

“I’m sorry you don’t know where he is,” Mira said as she looked for her notebook. “I know you must be worried about him.”

“Nobody is blaming you.”

Mira looked through cupboards and shelves. She was certain she had brought her father’s notebook to Ivercrest. She never went anywhere without it. If it wasn’t in her room at the university, then it had to be at the Dawson estate.

“How many rooms are there?” she asked.

“Seventy-eight. I know the exact number because Dawson and Harrington won’t shut up about mansion sizes.”

“Seventy-eight?” Mira gasped. “I’ll never find my notebook.”

It would take her forever to go through the entire estate.

The desk next to her rattled, and when it stopped, a drawer popped open on its own.

Amelia raised her eyebrows. “Don’t tell me it’s in there.”

Mira shook her head and walked closer. “No, I already checked that drawer. It wasn’t…”

She couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw the familiar burgundy leather of her notebook. Unmistakably, it was hers, but she still flipped through the pages just to make sure. Apparently, she had found a way to separate Dark Magic from blood. Obryn had told her as much. Supposedly, that’s how she was able to defeat Rakkley, but reading how she had done it made her eyes bulge. It actually worked.

“I take it from the stunned silence that you found your notebook?” Amelia drawled.

“Yes,” Mira responded.

“Good. Let’s get out of here, then.”

Mira looked up at the ceiling, wondering where the estate had found her notebook. “Thank you.”

“Did you just…talk to the estate?” Amelia asked with a giggle.
