Because the universe has a strange sense of humor, the video of them does not die down overnight. When they wake up the next morning, their follower count has jumped to 130,000, and the “big teeth” demo has hit 50,000 streams; “swallow me,” thanks to its role in the video that went viral, has become their most-listened-to song. Luca’s phone is flooded with messages from people she met at uni and stupid edits of her and Florence that Henry keeps sending her, showing zoomed-in footage of her and Florence interacting on stage. She makes it through an hour of this before turning on flight mode and going back to playing with her fidget cube.
“Hey,” Florence says, taking out the earbuds she’d put in after Toni turned off the radio to focus on Miray’s directions. “Are you all right?”
“The internet is a hellscape,” Luca says by way of explanation.
Florence makes a sympathetic noise and holds up one of her earbuds. “Want to listen to music with me?”
Luca does. She takes the earbud Florence offers her—they’re the kind connected by wire, which, knowing Florence, must be an intentional aesthetic choice. The song that crackles out of it isn’t one Luca knows; it’s a soft, wistful ballad in French that makes her feel like she’s in a movie as she watches the blur of the landscape outside. It’s followed first by a classical piece, then by a low, sultry R and B song with a heavy bass, and finally a rap song with lyrics in Japanese. She realizes that Florence must be shuffling through her playlist. It’s such an eclectic mix of genres and languages that it’s impossible to guess what song will be next; the only common denominator is Florence, who lets the music wash over her while she scribbles in her lyric book, knees tucked to her chest.
“Tell me if you want me to skip anything,” Florence tells her at one point.
Luca shakes her head. She feels like she has entered a museum filled with every single one of Florence’s favorite paintings. She wants to take her time studying them, to find out why Florence picked them, what she sees in them, how they all fit together.
It’s still a few hours to Warsaw. Suddenly, Luca doesn’t mind the drive at all.
It’s pure chance that they stumble upon the tattoo parlor. It’s in an unremarkable building, tucked away in a side alley a few minutes from their hostel. Luca slows down, sees that it’s still open, and says, without thinking about it, “We should get a band tattoo.”
Next to her, Izzy gasps out loud and grinds to a stop.
“Izzy,” says Florence.
“Come on.” Izzy pushes her sunglasses to the top of her head, her eyes bright. “Toni?”
Toni looks down at her arms, where she has a bunch of tattoos already. “I’d be down.”
Izzy points at her. “Nice. Florence?”
“What would we even get?” Florence asks, peering through the window of the tattoo parlor.
