Never Not Friends

Her dad jumps out of his seat.

Vinny moves.

So do I.

We nearly collide in the aisle. His hand catches my arm automatically, steadying me, and for one horrible second, we’re standing inches apart.

I jerk away. “Go after her.” His eyes stay on mine as if he wants to say something, but I physically push him away. “Go!”

He rushes down the aisle, with Juliet’s parents following behind.

“What just happened?” someone to the side of me whispers.

“I have no idea.”

“Did she call it off?”

“I think so.”

“Was she looking at the maid of honor?”

Oh my gosh.

I need to get out of here.

My friends are suddenly beside me.

“Come on.” Camila grabs my hand and tugs me forward.

And that’s when I realize I have to do something. I have to make sure Vinny and Juliet get married. Because I cannot live with myself if I just telepathically ruined their wedding.

I hurry down the aisle with my friends. “We need to find Juliet.”

But Sandy intercepts us once we reach the courtyard. “She’s with Vinny,” she says, her voice low and urgent. “Give them a minute.”

We all stare at the bridal building and Juliet’s parents huddled in front of the closed door. Sherri Brooks walks past me toward the Montgomerys. Our eyes meet, and something in her expression tells me she’s not nearly as surprised as everyone else.

It’s terrifying.

A new wave of nausea hits me as I relive the last minute.

Juliet looked at Vinny.

Then at me.

Then ran.

She knows.

Maybe not everything, but enough to pause her wedding.

And it’s all my fault.

My hands go to my stomach, and I start pacing.

“Em?” Camila shoots me a concerned look. “Are you okay?”

I shake my head but don’t say anything. Because I’m not okay. Not even close.
