Broken Crown

by Zoe Blake

My mistake had been giving her the space to come to terms with what I required of her.

Not again.

She would not leave this bed without knowing deep in her bones that she was meant for me, and only me.

Before agreeing that she would be my wife.

Only death would part us from this moment on.

I looked down at her prone form.

The firelight sent soft shimmers of light over her pale skin as I leaned over her to suck her nipple while I pushed a third finger inside, stretching her, preparing her for what was to come.

Her hips rose to press against my hand.

She was close, her pulse fluttering against my lips as I kissed the hollow of her throat.

I laved at her nipple before trailing my mouth along the delicate column of her neck, kissing and licking along her jawline, tasting the salt of her dried tears.

"Oh God!" Her words caught on a sob.

The moment her lips opened with her release, I kissed her again.

Wanting to taste her submission, to swallow the sound of her pleasure and keep it locked inside me forever.

Even as her body trembled, I eased my hips between her thighs.

Fisting my already painfully hard shaft, I placed the end at her slick entrance.

Sabrina's hands on my chest gave me pause, the heat of her palms burning through my skin to the heart I'd spent a lifetime encasing in ice.

She studied my face, her eyes luminous with unshed tears. "Say you love me, Sebastian."

My brow furrowed. "What?"

Her lower lip trembled, the vulnerability in her expression slicing through me. "Please. I think I could bear it all if I knew…if I knew you loved me."

How easily I could tell her I loved her…if it were a lie.

If my words held no more meaning than the drops of rain splattering against the window, I would tell her anything she wanted to hear.

It was what I did.

It was how I survived.

My entire life was built around allusions to love.

Romance. Happily ever afters. Diamonds.

When in reality it was built around the illusion of love.

A traitorous slip of the hand.

Exploiting a weakness to gain money and influence.

Using the naive as pawns for revenge.

I had told so many lies. What was one more?
