My Forever Sin

I snatch it from him again and gulp it down, some of the liquid dribbling out of the corner of my mouth, eyes twitching as I fight to keep my face neutral.

“Jordie,” he grits, jaw ticking.

I shove the empty glass into his chest. “You’re not my keeper.”

“I’m gonna… go find the guys,” Cassie announces, her voice carrying an awkward lilt to it.

“I’m coming with you,” I say, scowling one last time at Kain and entwining my hand in her warm one as the glass clatters to the stone floor. But before I can leave, Kain grips my elbow, halting me in place.

“Let go of me.” It seems like that’s the only thing I ask of him recently. “I’m catching up with my friend,” I grit.

“Sorry Cassie, but me and Jordie have things to discuss.” His voice is a calm storm, and I don’t know what’s on the horizon.

Cassie gives me an apologetic look, but we’re interrupted before Kain can drag me away.

Someone squeals, and rapid clicking of heels pulls our attention to the Halloween decorated altar. My jaw clamps the moment I see Kain’s fiancée clapping her hands in excitement. She’s dressed as a sexy nun but at this point, nothing surprises me anymore.

This is her party?

My eyes betray me because I glance at Kain, but he’s still fixed wholly on me.

The bell of the church chimes midnight, the sound booming through the party, and time seems to still. The raucous grows quiet, the flames on the sconces flickering like dying stars.

Lacey climbs to the podium, tapping on the mic while the music and bell stops quiets. “Thank you everyone for coming.”

I chew on my anger as I watch as one of her friends pours a shot into her mouth, most of it sliding down to her cleavage as everyone cheers.

Blake sidles up beside me and groans, “Let’s just go home.”

I turn. “That’s a good idea.”

“It’s time for the yearly game!” She giggles, and the crowd resumes to a hushed murmur around us. “You know where to go everyone!”

Asher grunts. “Will all of you stop being so fucking boring?” He rounds behind me towards Kain, before throwing his arm around his shoulders and slapping his chest. Blake’s fists clench but swiftly unclench when he clocks my attention on him. “Jordie is back, the gang is together again, so we deserve to have some fun. Unless you’d all prefer to be miserable in your million-pound mansions?”

People begin flooding out the side doors of the church, heading in the direction of the forest.

“I think I’ll sit this one out.” Cassie shuffles out of the way of people skipping towards the exits. “But you guys go.”

“Why?” Blake’s eyebrows furrow. “That’s unlike you.”

Shit.

“I’m dressed in my comfies, you really think I came here for the party?” She gestures to her outfit that does a good job of hiding her bump. “I came to see Jord. I’ll watch.”

My head spins lightly. I would be a liar if I said a little prickle of excitement doesn’t teeter at the edge of my brain at having a bit of spooky fun.

Fun.

“I guess you have no choice but to play with me, little devil.” Kain’s deep voice caresses my ear, and I whip around to meet his face only a millimetre away from mine. Red, hungry eyes drink me in and my fists clench at my sides.

Meanwhile, Blake’s eyes are bouncing between us. I mean, it’s not like I’m exactly trying to hide my distaste for Kain tonight.

“I’m not playing anything with you,” I seethe, brushing past him.
