Things hurt more than they should. The guilt of every decision I’ve ever made is hitting me over the head.

I’m starting to see now why people go to therapy.

“I don’t mean without you. You’re there in my ideal happy place, viper. It was more of a statement about finances. But we’re good for money, G. Don’t ever worry about that.”

“So, we can buy the big yacht?” I say the first thing that comes to my head.

He smirks. “Maybe I already treated myself to it.”

My eyes go wide as the flames come into view.

“Oh, shit,” Colten mutters.

“Colt, why the hell are there firetrucks? Aren’t they going to report this shit?”

He laughs, pulling up to park beside Hunter. “We have friends in the right places, G. Benefits of a small town.”

He reaches for the handle, but I grab his bicep. He shakes his head and says, “Stay in the truck. We’re going to haul out the drugs from the surviving warehouse into Tate’s van. You don’t need to be breaking a nail doing that.”

My stomach drops. Something's off.

I open my mouth to speak. I know the words I want to say, but I’m too chicken shit to actually say them. It’s the wrong time. He’s got a warehouse full of drugs burning. I’m overreacting; my dad always used to tell me that. That one day, it would end up getting me killed.

Instead, I unbuckle my seatbelt, lean over, and kiss my husband with such force it cracks our teeth together.

I might not be able to say I love him. But I want him to know.

He pulls back, staring into my eyes. It’s like he knows what I’m trying to say.

And then he’s gone, striding towards his brothers and the roaring flames, while I sit back and watch.

CHAPTER NINETY

Colten

“Evan’s sending one of his men over to open up and check over the second unit. They think this one was set off with explosives,” Hunter tells me as I approach.

Perfect. Just what we needed to hear. More fire trucks incoming.

“And what happens when he finds a shit ton of coke?” I ask, shoving my hand in my pocket.

Evan is head of the fire department, and we’ve got him in our pocket, but who knows what his limit is.

“We pay Evan double,” Hunter mumbles, staring at the flames.

We follow the firefighter to the next unit, and Jett hands him the key and tries to follow, but I grab his shirt and yank him back, moving him away.

“Let him go in first, Jett,” I say under my breath

Something ain’t sitting right about this. I turn to Tate. “Go stand by my truck, make sure G is okay,” I command.

We all instinctively take a step back as Tate jogs back to Gianna. The second I heard the word explosive, I sure as hell wasn’t going in there blind.

I’m holding my breath as he opens the lock. And then he pushes it open. Nothing.

“Phew. I thought that was going to blow,” Jett says.

The firefighter walks through the door, and I let out a breath.
