“I have to catch my breath. I need to clean up. Nap. Must nap. Then we’re doing that again.”
Rook laughed, breathless and dizzy with relief. “Whatever you want, my mate. Whatever you want,” he said, slowly sliding free of Ethan’s body.
The shadows took care of the cleanup - they were useful like that - and it meant Rook could stay, holding his mate, as Ethan’s breathing evened out within minutes, as his exhaustion finally caught up with him.
Rook watched him sleep, his shadows pooled protectively around them both. Dark patterns now traced Ethan’s throat and his wrists, visible even in low light. Marks that would tell Sebastian Pope - or anyone else for that matter - exactly whose mate they were looking at.
No one would hurt Ethan again - not Pope, not trafficking networks, not even the ghosts of exes who’d made him afraid of his own skin. Ethan didn’t know it yet, but he was finally safe, and if anyone had an issue with that, Rook would eat them, and then burn their world down afterward. It’s what any decent mate would do.
Chapter Fourteen
Ethan woke wrapped in shadows and warmth, his body pleasantly sore in ways he’d catalog later when his brain started functioning properly. For now, he simply existed in the space between sleep and consciousness, aware of Rook’s heartbeat against his back like an echo of his own pulse.
The mate bond was there, too, humming beneath his skin, as a constant presence that felt like coming home to a place he’d never been before. He could feel Rook’s contentment, his fierce protectiveness, and even the way he tracked every shift in Ethan’s breathing.
“You’re thinking very loudly,” Rook murmured against his neck.
“I don’t think that’s physically possible. I didn’t think thoughts made a sound except in the mind.”
“Welcome to the mate bond.” Rook’s hand splayed across Ethan’s chest, right over his heart. “I can feel you cataloging sensations.”
“It’s a longtime habit.” Ethan shifted slightly so he could see Rook’s face. “Can you actually read my thoughts, or are you interpreting emotional data?”
“Emotional data. But you’re very specific with your emotions, so it’s close.” Rook pressed a kiss to his shoulder. “You’re not panicking.”
That was the thing, wasn’t it? Ethan was lying naked in bed with another person, with shadows literally under his skin, and yet his anxiety, which should’ve been running at the highest levels possible right now…had gone quiet.
He hadn’t had to suppress it, or manage it through breathing techniques or mental lists. The constant static of intrusive thoughts, the need to double-check door locks and review conversations for mistakes, along with the physical tension he carried in his chest like armor against the world’s unpredictability... it was all quiet.
It wasn’t gone. Ethan wasn’t silly enough to think that he’d never have an intrusive thought again, but the peace in his brain was definitely appreciated.
“I should be panicking.” Ethan turned in Rook’s arms, studying his face. “I have a documented anxiety disorder. My therapist gave me a workbook.”
Rook grinned. “How’s that working for you?”
“I completed every exercise twice to make sure I did them correctly, then felt anxious about whether I was applying the techniques properly.” Ethan touched the shadow marks on his wrist, watching them pulse gently in response. “This is better than the workbook.”
Rook’s laugh rumbled through the bond. “I’ll tell Silas. He’ll want to publish a paper on mate bonds as anxiety treatment.”
“He absolutely should. The therapeutic applications alone…” Ethan paused. “Look, I’m doing it again. I’m theorizing about my own supernatural condition instead of catastrophizing about all the ways this could go wrong. That’s totally new.”
“Good new or bad new?”
Ethan tested the question, examining his own emotional landscape the way he’d examine research data. The bond felt like a weighted blanket made of certainty, and Rook’s presence was a fixed point that didn’t require constant verification - he was just there. He could feel Rook’s location without checking and sense his emotional state without asking. A huge part of his world had just become quantifiable in ways that made sense to his brain.
“Good new. Definitely good new.” He met Rook’s eyes. “I need to shower, eat breakfast, and discuss how we’re going to handle Sebastian Pope. In that order.”
“You’re perfect.” Rook kissed him thoroughly. “But we’re showering together because I’m not ready to be more than fifteen feet away from you yet.”
“Really? The bond has distance limitations?”
“I’m not sure, but I just want to see what it would be like holding you in the water.”

Forty minutes later, Ethan sat in the Shadow House kitchen wearing more borrowed clothes - one of Rook’s shirts that hung to his thighs and his own jeans from yesterday. Julian had looked up from his laptop, noticed Ethan’s shadow marks, and simply nodded in greeting. “Congratulations,” he said before going back to what he was doing.
Rook moved around the kitchen assembling breakfast while his shadows maintained contact with Ethan’s ankle under the table. The constant touch should have made Ethan’s skin crawl. Back when he was with his ex, the man used to grab his wrist during arguments, holding him in place while systematically listing Ethan’s failures until Ethan felt as though he couldn’t breathe. The shadows were nothing like that.
