I’ve never been so fucking useless in my goddamn life.
“We’re here,” Jumper says and I open my eyes. The Jeep is sitting in front of the clubhouse and Gear, Morgan and Doc Smith are waiting by the front door. Sucking in a breath, I nod and reach over Lennon to open the door.
When we reach the others, Doc Smith takes one look at Lennon’s face before turning her gaze to me. “How much did she have to drink?”
“One cocktail.”
Her brow arches. “That’s it?”
I nod and she mirrors the move, gesturing for us to go inside as Gear holds the door open. As soon as we’re in the clubhouse, Doc Smith points to the couches over in the living room.
“Go lay her down over there.”
I do as instructed and lay Lennon down on the couch, sitting next to her and holding her hand in mine. Doc Smith walks up to us and clears her throat.
“If you want me to look at her, you’re going to need to move.”
Reluctantly, I stand and let the doctor sit next to Lennon. She listens to her heartbeat, takes her temp and checks her blood pressure before pulling up her eyelids and shining a light in her eyes.
“Do you mind?” she asks, glancing over her shoulder at me. “Give me some room to work here.”
I grunt, refusing to step back. “You have room.”
“Rooster,” she snaps, standing up and going toe to toe with me. “If you insist on hovering, do it from the back of the couch where you won’t get in my damn way. You can even hold her hand.”
We stare at each other for a moment before I finally give in, taking a step back.
She’s right - she’s helping Lennon and I need to let her do that.
I move to the back of the couch and take Lennon’s hand in mine, pressing my lips to the back of it as Doc Smith goes back to checking her over.
“Lennon,” Doc calls, placing her hand on Lennon’s shoulder and giving it a shake. “Can you hear me?”
Lennon’s eyelids flutter. “Dalton?”
“I’m right here, baby,” I tell her, kissing her hand again as Lennon falls back into unconsciousness. Doc looks up at me and purses her lips.
“One drink, you said?”
I nod. “Yeah.”
“This isn’t consistent with one drink,” she says, shaking her head. “How quickly did she deteriorate?”
“Ten minutes, maybe? Fifteen, tops.”
She stands and props her hands on her hips as she looks down at Lennon. “Was her drink unattended for any length of time?”
I stare at her, recalling the time we were at the bar.
“Uh… she set it on the bar?” I shake my head. “I guess we were a little distracted but we were right there.”
She lets out a sigh and nods. “Rooster, I think somebody drugged her.”
“What?” I hiss, my vision tunneling as I stare at the doctor in front of me.
“I’ll run her blood. We won’t know for sure until tomorrow at the earliest but my guess is that somebody slipped something into her drink when y’all were at the bar. It doesn’t take much and if you were distracted for even a moment…”
Fuck.
