Almost is Never Enough

“Feed you?” I offer because truthfully, I hadn’t gotten that far yet. Hell, I’ve never even been out on a real date like this. It’s always been casual between other women and I but with Lennon… this feels like anything but casual.

Even if I can’t figure out why yet.

She laughs. “Well, thank God. If you’d brought me here and not fed me, we’d get to know each other real fast when my hangry side came out.”

Fuck.

I want to hear that laugh again.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing all the sides of her.

“That could be interesting,” I muse, a smile playing on my lips as I watch her. Her eyes widen and she scoffs.

“For who?” She points to me as she shakes her head. “Certainly not you.”

“Don’t underestimate me, babe,” I tell her and her head tilts to the side in question but before she can ask anything else, Nero appears at our table with our food and beers on a tray.

“Birria tacos,” he says, setting them down in front of Lennon along with her beer before he turns to me. “And street tacos. Enjoy, my friends.”

After he sets my food down in front of me, he heads back to the truck and I turn just in time to see Lennon take the first bite of her food. Her eyes roll back in her head and she lets out a quiet moan that goes straight to my damn cock. I can’t help thinking of the last time she made that noise, all pressed up against me with my tongue in her mouth.

Fuck.

Grabbing my beer, I take a swig and try to think of something else.

“So, why the bakery?” I ask and barely resist the urge to smack myself in the face.

Could I sound anymore like a fucking moron?

“Why the bakery?” she repeats, one corner of her lips tugging up as she fights back a smile. “I’ve always loved baking and someday I want to open my own bakery. When I moved here, my boss, Calvin, was looking for someone who could take over more of the day to day operations so it seemed like the perfect fit.”

“Where did you move from?” I ask.

“Arizona.”

I nod.

I already knew this but I can’t exactly let her know that.

Fuck.

That only makes all of this more complicated.

We eat in silence for a few moments, but it doesn’t feel awkward. It just feels…comfortable. Every once in a while, she’ll peek up at me and when she finds me already looking at her, she smiles.

“So,” I say after I’ve finished my first taco. “Why move to Baton Rouge?”

She purses her lips and sighs. “Because Owen, my ex, got a job here so I came with him.”

“You didn’t want to leave Arizona?” I ask. Sadness creeps into her honey-colored eyes and it’s a punch to the gut. I want to wipe that look off her face.

“No,” she says, turning to look at the river. “It’s not that. Besides my best friend and my sister, there was nothing left for me in Arizona. But now that I’ve left Owen… I’m all alone here and I don’t really know what to do with myself.”

I nod and reach across the table, hooking her pointer finger with mine. “What do you want to do?”

“I’m working on that part,” she says with a small smile despite the uncertainty still lingering in her gaze. She glances down at my lips before she turns away, trying and failing to hide her smile. “What about you?”

I blink. “What about me?”
