My eyes snap open.
“How the fuck would he know that?” Dalton explodes as he continues wearing a path into the floor behind Max.
“Again, that is not an answer I have today. Owen also said that Derek encouraged him to ‘get his girl back’.”
“So,” I force out, my stomach churning. “He gave him the idea?”
Max sighs. “Owen couldn’t say, for sure.”
“Of course he couldn’t,” Dalton snaps. He lets out a harsh laugh as he shoves a hand through his hair and shakes his head.
“They drank together a lot and his memories of some of their conversations are…fuzzy, at best.” Max shrugs, his brows drawn together as he looks at me. I hear what he’s truly saying.
We may never know.
I may never find out if the man I spent two years of my life with came up with this plot to drug and kidnap me or if this other person was involved.
A shudder runs down my spine and I suck in a breath.
I hate that.
“And that brings us to Leigh-Ann,” Max says.
Fuck.
Just hearing her name is enough to bring back memories of the attack.
Tears sting my eyes.
There is a loose thread at the corner of my blanket and I pick at it as I chew the inside of my cheek, trying to fight them back. Dalton returns to the bed and slides in next to me, slipping his arm under my back and pulling me closer.
It hurts like fucking hell.
But it gives me something to focus on besides the memories.
He reaches down with his other hand and grabs mine, giving me something else to ground myself as I continue to pick at the blanket.
“When I first picked her up, she swore up and down that she had no idea what I was talking about, claimed she didn’t even know Lennon—”
“That’s a fucking lie,” Dalton says, cutting him off as his hold on my hand tightens slightly.
I turn my focus to the feeling of his hand in mine, the warmth of his skin.
Breathe, Lennon.
“She came up to Lennon at one of my fights, tried to cause trouble between us.”
I remember her coming up to me at the fight.
How sweet she seemed, trying to warn me what kind of man Dalton is.
Then, I remember the person who attacked me.
My heart thunders in my chest as I recall the way she came at me with such anger.
“Hey,” Dalton says, dragging me out of my panic slightly. “Look at me.”
I meet his gaze.
