Almost is Never Enough

I am in agony.

My body hurts.

Everywhere.

The button the doctor handed me for pain meds is laying on the bed next to my leg, taunting me, but I won’t press it.

Not yet.

Not until Dalton comes back.

The meds usually knock me out and I don’t know where he went or what he’s doing. I can’t fall asleep and miss his return. It’s been almost an hour since he rushed out of here and even though Storm assured me he was fine, I’m not convinced. I saw that look in his eyes when he stalked out of the room.

That single minded focus he gets when he’s facing a threat head-on.

And I know what that means.

Hyde.

Laying my head back on the pillow, I close my eyes and suck in a breath, trying to will my body to relax. I count each second as I pull in my next breath and hold it for a few seconds before slowly releasing it.

Then I do it again.

And again.

Focusing on the task is helping to keep the pain somewhat at bay but my damn head is a mess.

Goddamn it.

Where is he?

The click of the door grabs my attention and I lift my head, opening my eyes. A gasp rips itself from my lips.

The man stumbling into my room doesn’t look like the man who stormed out of here almost an hour ago. Blood is streaked across his face, his arm and covering his hands. Under the blood is a layer of dirt and grime. The sleeve of his t-shirt is shredded and his arm is torn the fuck up, tiny rocks embedded in his skin. It’s cradled at a ninety-degree angle across his stomach and he uses his other arm to prop himself up on the wall as he makes his way into the room.

My heart stops.

“Oh my god.”

What the hell happened to him?

He looks up at the sound of my voice and offers me a weak smile. “Hey, baby.”

“Don’t you ‘hey, baby’ me, Dalton,” I yell, throwing the covers off my legs. His gaze darts down to them before shooting back to my eyes.

“You’d better not get out of that bed.”

I arch a brow. “Or what? You’ll spank me?”

“Don’t tempt me,” he says through gritted teeth as he pushes off the wall and stumbles further into the room, catching himself on the rolling table at the foot of my bed.

Yeah, right.

He can barely fucking walk so he’s not going to be doing any spanking anytime soon.

“You fucking idiot,” Jumper growls, rushing into the room and hooking an arm around Dalton’s back. “I told you to fucking wait for me.”

“And I told you I needed to get to Lennon,” Dalton fires back, sending a glare in his best friend’s direction.
