“And now, Lennon was attacked by a woman. So, if Derek went to Lennon’s ex to cause problems, why wouldn’t he also seek out someone from my past with a fucking axe to grind?”
He sucks in a breath. “Fucking Leigh-Ann.”
Something in his voice makes me pause and I turn to him, arching a brow.
“What?”
“Shit,” he says, with a wince. “I didn’t tell you because I was handling it but Leigh-Ann has been texting Gear and I since you ended things with her, asking us to talk some sense into you. Or to let her onto the compound so she could talk to you. We didn’t, obviously, but…”
“But she hasn’t gone away,” I finish for him and he shakes his head.
“No, she hasn’t.”
I release a breath, my hand dragging through my hair again. “When was the last time you heard from her?”
“Last week.”
Another piece slides into place.
Fuck.
I turn and continue down the hospital hallway, a plan coming together in my mind. If I call Leigh-Ann, she’ll answer and she’ll probably agree to meet with me.
She’s always been a terrible fucking liar.
So I need to look her in the eye when I ask these questions.
Once we make it outside to our bikes, I pull my phone out of my pocket and dial Leigh-Ann’s number. Jumper is watching me closely like he thinks I’m about to snap but if I do, I know he’s got my back.
“Rooster?” she answers, a little breathless, in the middle of the second ring.
It’s probably best to be as vague as possible in this call.
Even if it kills me.
“Hey, Leigh-Ann,” I say, trying to keep the anger from my voice. My shaking hand clenches into a fist at my side as I suck in a breath. “You free to meet up?”
“Right now?” Her voice sounds brighter almost instantly and I grit my teeth. Just thinking she could be responsible for what happened to my girl makes me want to fucking scream.
“Yeah.”
“Um,” she hums, pausing dramatically. “Yeah, I guess I could meet up. Where?”
I look out to the street and an idea forms in my mind. “I’m not far from Sunrise Diner. You wanna meet me there?”
“Sure,” she says, sounding far too damn pleased with herself. “I can be there in fifteen.”
I nod. “See you soon.”
I hang up the phone as I swing my leg over my bike and Jumper follows. The rumble of our bikes fills the air and the vibration of the motor moves through me, giving me something to focus on. As we pull out of the hospital parking lot, I go over how best to approach her. Everything up until now has been pure instinct but I can’t just charge into the diner and accuse her of hurting Lennon.
Fuck.
I’m gonna have to play her goddamn game.
And I fucking hate that.
By the time we pull into the parking lot at the diner, I’m even more amped up. I don’t want to fucking be here. I want to be back in bed with Lennon, taking care of her and helping her heal.
