Almost is Never Enough

God, that would piss me the fuck off.

This needs to end tonight and unfortunately for me, that requires a conversation. Releasing a breath, I open my eyes and begin walking up to the front door of the clubhouse. As soon as I step inside, I’m ready to get this shit over with and it takes Leigh-Ann all of point two seconds to clock that I’m in the room. She jumps up from the couch, squealing my name and I catch the shit eating grin on Jumper’s face just before her body collides with mine.

“There you are,” she purrs, rubbing her hands all over my chest. “I’ve been waiting for you, baby.”

I arch a brow. “Why?”

She laughs but her expression falters for just a second before she’s pasting another smile on her face, although this one looks a little more hesitant.

“What do you mean why, silly?” She laughs, flicking a glance over to the other people in the room before she turns her focus back to me. “I missed you. I wanted to see you.”

Not fucking once in my twenty-seven years has anyone called me silly. Rude, sure. Asshole, yes. Silly, though? Absolutely fucking not. Her hand reaches my dick and I swear, it shrivels back up into my body, repulsed by her touch and the smell of her perfume.

Goddamn it.

Why did I let it go this far?

“What do you say we head upstairs and I can show you just how much I missed you?”

I shake my head, gently moving her a few inches to my side. “No.”

She huffs, in shock or annoyance, I’m not sure which as I walk over behind the bar and grab a cold beer out of the mini fridge. After popping the cap off, I flick it towards the trash can, missing by a few inches and turn back as I take the first pull. Leigh-Ann is back in my space, her brow furrowed as she stares up at me.

“Roost, what is going on?”

I shake my head, gripping my bottle of beer a little too tightly. “Nothing.”

She leans in closer, looking up at me through her lashes as she pressed her hand to my dick and I swear the fucker is screaming at me and making threats if I even think about accepting her proposition.

“You look stressed, baby,” she whispers, flashing me a smile that I suspect is supposed to be seductive but it has no effect on me. “Let’s go upstairs and I’ll make you feel better.”

I take a step back and shake my head again. “No.”

“Rooster,” she scoffs, dropping the sweet act and propping her hands on her hips as she stares me down, looking beyond bewildered. “What the hell is your deal tonight?”

“No deal. Just over this,” I say, motioning in her general direction and her jaw drops as Gear chokes on his beer. He knows this has been coming for a while, Jumper and Gear both did, so I don’t know why he’s so surprised by my words.

Fuck.

Maybe I am being a little blunt but I’ve never been good at letting someone down easy.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

I slip past her and head over to the couches where Gear, Jumper and Ink are hanging out, sipping on beers of their own and watching this little soap opera play out. Fuck them. I wish I could just sit here with a shit eating grin on my face and play spectator instead. She follows behind me and I throw my body into the side chair and fling my leg up over the arm of it, taking another pull of my beer.

“Means we’re done and you should leave.”

She looks over to my brothers like they are going to talk some sense into me but they wouldn’t dare. At least not in front of her. The number one rule of any MC is loyalty. You have to know that your brothers always have your back in any situation and this is no different. Besides, they’ve known from the jump that this was only ever supposed to be casual. She’s the one who decided to try and change the rules. They avoid her gaze, making their stance abundantly clear and she stares at them for a moment, her teeth gently chewing at her bottom lip before she finally gives up. When she turns back to me, I notice the tears in her eyes and my stomach drops.

Shit.

I didn’t want to make her fucking cry.

“You can’t mean that,” she whispers.

“Leigh-Ann,” I say, slowly, dropping my leg from the arm of the chair and leaning forward as I look her dead in the eyes. “I was clear what this was when we started. I was never going to be your boyfriend. This was never going to be a real relationship. And now, it’s done. You need to leave.”

“Yeah but I thought…” She stops and I know damn well what she thought. It’s why I should have done this when it was clear that she had started imagining a future for us. A future I could never give her.
