“I’m going to worship you like you deserve, baby. The way you should have always been adored.” With that, any restraint I had snaps and I can’t hold back any longer.
“Nix. I need you. Now.” Without a word, he stands, spins me around, and pulls my hips back toward him. When he has me where he wants me, I plant my feet. He lines himself up at my entrance, teasing me with the head of his magnificent cock before plunging into me. I cry out. He pulls out and thrusts in again, making me moan. Warmth coats my back as he leans over and braces his hands on the counter next to mine. He keeps up a steady pace, kissing and sucking the skin behind my ear, making me climb faster than I ever have before.
Everything about him gets me off. From the way he thrusts into me to the noises he’s making, to the occasional kiss he plants along my spine. All of it just works for me.
“Emma,” he groans in my ear, his pace increasing.
“Oh, God,” I moan as I feel the pressure building in my belly. “More,” I demand and he groans again. He rears back and drives into me even harder than before. My hand slips on the counter from sweating. He reaches around and his finger swirls over my clit. My knees buckle. He catches me, holding me up with one hand while the other continues its assault on the sensitive bundle of nerves.
“Baby, you gotta get there,” he says through clenched teeth, pumping his hips faster. He moves slightly, changing the angle, and hits the perfect spot.
“Yes!” I cry out. One hand grabs my breast as the other stays around my belly, pulling me into him as he powers into me. My orgasm hits me. Stars explode behind my eyes and I call out his name as I clench and pulse around him. He thrusts into me one more time before stilling and letting out a low groan.
After a moment, he collapses on me, trembling. His breath feathers over my back and I soak it up, loving every single second. Warm lips meet my skin as he kisses up to my neck.
“I love you, Emma,” he whispers.
I love you, too, I think but the words don’t come out.

“You wanna do something, baby? Watch a movie, maybe?” Nix asks as I’m sitting on the couch reading.
“Sure. What did you have in mind?”
He pulls a DVD case for FRIENDS out from behind his back and I burst into giggles.
“I figured I needed to know your references.”
“Nix, it’s gonna take a whole lot longer than one day for you to learn all the movie references I have in my head.”
“Hey, I’m game,” he answers, shrugging his shoulders. Just as I’m opening my mouth to say something else, there is a knock at the door. His brows furrow. “You expecting someone, baby?”
I shake my head. “Nope.”
He approaches the door cautiously, like at any moment, someone is going to break it down and come charging in. I scoff and roll my eyes. He shoots me a look of warning. When he reaches the door, he checks through the peephole before turning back to me with confusion on his face.
“There’s no one there.”
“Well, open it. Maybe it was the UPS guy.”
“Did you order something?”
“Uh…no.”
“Then why would it be—”
“Oh, this is ridiculous,” I say, interrupting him and jumping off the couch. I stalk past him and rip open the door. All I see is an empty hallway. When I step out to get a better look, I kick something small on the ground. Dread fills me as soon as I see the small velvet box.
Please, dear God, don’t let that be what I think it is.
Slowly, I crouch down, pick up the box, and open it. My breath lodges in my throat and the world spins as I look at the diamond heartbeat necklace I never wanted to see again. This necklace used to be something I cherished, something that reminded me of Ryan and his love for me. Now, it just makes me sick. And angry. The manipulation is clear to me now. The way he showed up with his charm, pretty words, and even prettier presents, and I fell for it every single time. And he never said sorry. Not even once.
“Em, what is that?” Nix asks softly, sensing my unease. Closing the door, I hand the box to him.
“It’s one of his presents.”
Nix looks down at the necklace and my unease only increases. Seeing him with it is just so wrong. Nix is the best thing in my life and that necklace represents the worst. They don’t belong together.
