Why is that such a crime in his eyes?

* * * *

From my spot in bed, I hear the front door open and I close my eyes, pretending to be asleep as I listen to Ryan stumble down the hallway to our room. Ever since he left earlier, I’ve been lying here in the dark, trying to sleep but it’s alluded me and my mind keeps going over our fight again and again. What did I do that was so wrong?

Ryan shuffles into the room and sits down next to me on the bed. “Baby, you awake?”

It’s clear from the slurring of his words he’s been letting loose tonight and I suck in a quiet breath. He runs a gentle touch down my back and I resist the urge to jerk away from him.

“What do you want, Ryan?”

“Oh, come on, baby. Don’t be like that.”

Anger bubbles up inside me once again and I roll over to face him, meeting his blood shot eyes.

Jesus…

How much did he drink?

“Don’t do what, Ryan?”

He scowls, running the tip of his finger down my jawline. My automatic response is to lean into his touch but not tonight. I have to stand my ground.

“Don’t be mad. I didn’t mean anything by it. I’ve just been stressed with work.”

“I don’t like it when you talk to me like that.”

He chuckles and my blood boils as I whip my body around, turning my back to him again.

“I wasn’t serious, babe. You’re too sensitive.”

“Leave me alone,” I growl, hating when he says that to me. Like my feelings don’t matter at all.

“Aww, you don’t mean that, baby.” He leans down and picks me up as if I weigh nothing and I struggle against him as he moves us to the center of the bed. When he sets me down, I turn and press my hands against his chest.

“Stop, Ryan.”

“Shhh, sweetheart. I know what you need,” he whispers before plastering sloppy kisses along my neck. His hand dips under my shirt and I struggle to get away from him.

“Ryan, I’m serious. Cut it out.” Frustration bubbles up in me, along with a small sliver of fear I don’t quite understand.

“You can’t resist me.” He taunts, ripping my shirt over my head and leaving me in only a pair of panties.

“Ryan! Stop!” I push against his firm chest and squirm, trying to free myself.

“You know you want it, Emma.”

The next thing I know, his pants and boxers are on the floor and he’s pulling my panties down my legs.

“I said no!”

“Baby, stop fighting me,” he coos in my ear after he throws the red material to the floor. I struggle against him and he pins my hands above my head with a grin on his face. “Wanna play hard to get, huh?”

When he slides into me, the fight leaves my body entirely. I stare up at the shadows on the ceiling made by passing cars with one thought running through my mind:

What the hell is happening right now?
