Hidden Scars

He sets the spatula down next to the stove and walks over to me, wrapping his arms around me.

“Honestly, babe,” he says, his voice soothing me. “It wasn’t that big of a deal. No need to even apologize.”

“But…” I stutter, wondering if I imagined everything that happened last night. “You wouldn’t even speak to me last night.”

“Emma, I don’t want to dwell on it. You were a brat last night and you’ve said you’re sorry so can we just move on and not let it ruin another day?”

I pause, staring at him. I was a brat? How the hell was I a brat? Just as I’m about to respond, I consider his question and realize that he’s right. I could get upset about this and launch into a whole new fight or I could just let it go and enjoy today with him.

“That sounds like a good plan. What do you say we spend today unpacking and then go out tonight – just you and me?” I ask and he smiles.

“Sounds perfect, baby.” His arms tighten around me and I let out a breath, letting go of all the drama from yesterday. “I love you, Emma.”

“I love you, too, Ryan.”

Ryan walks into the bedroom where I’m picking out my dress for dinner and smiles as he leans against the doorframe, tossing the car keys from one hand to the other and back again.

“Hey, I’m going to go out with the guys for a while,” he says and I freeze, meeting his eyes in the full-length mirror on the back of the bathroom door.

“But we have dinner plans.”

He shrugs. “We’ll do it another night.”

Openly gawking at him, I turn slowly to face him and attempt to keep my temper in check. “Are you kidding me right now?”

“No.”

“You’re going to ditch me after the fit you threw last night?”

He rolls his eyes, scoffing at me as he pushes off the doorframe. “I didn’t throw a fit. Stop being so fucking dramatic.”

“We didn’t even have plans yesterday,” I continue, losing the battle to hold back my anger.

“It’s not that big of a deal.”

“Well, it certainly was last night when I was the one going out but I guess the same rules don’t apply to you, do they? We made plans for dinner tonight.”

My hands shake, betraying just how furious I am right now. I can’t believe he’s doing this to me, especially after last night.

“Why are you being so mean?” he asks.

WHAT?

He actually has the balls to look hurt, like he’s the victim here and I feel like I’m losing my mind.

“You can’t be serious.”

He nods. “Yeah, I am serious. You can’t take all my time. You have to let me see my friends every once in a while, too.”

“I’m sorry, but what the fuck are you talking about? You made plans with me tonight and now you’re just tossing me aside for your friends.”

“So?” he asks, shrugging again like he really doesn’t understand the problem but I have a hard time believing he’s that dense. “We’ll grab dinner tomorrow or whenever.”

“No. You don’t get to do this to me.”

He rolls his eyes again and tosses his keys to the other hand. “All right, well… I’m leaving. Try to put the bitch away before I get back.”
