I laugh again. “He tries to feed you? And why would he cut you off?”
“He’s worried about my blood pressure but if he would just let me go off on that tool, my blood pressure would be fine,” she complains, rolling her eyes.
“Sweetie, even Kyle doesn’t deserve this level of ire right now. I’m a little worried that you’re packing a shiv or something.”
She grins and says nothing, making me think that I wasn’t so far off the mark. Scary bitch. “What is he even doing here? Didn’t you tell him to leave you alone?”
I groan and roll my eyes. My head pounds in response, and I look back down at her. “In every way I can think of. Multiple times.”
“Then I’m totally justified…” She starts to stand up, and I stop her.
“Please don’t leave me yet,” I beg, and she sits back down with a grumble.
“Okay, fine but when I see him again, I’m gonna let him have it.”
“Deal,” I agree, laughing. Without warning, my thoughts turn back to Trey, and my chest hurts as I wonder if he was telling the truth.
“So, who all is out there?”
“Kyle,” she growls, her lip curling, and I smile again, “Mom, Dad, Nix, Tucker, and Daisy.”
“Trey left?” I whisper, my throat feeling tight, and my eyes stinging.
“Well, yeah. He sat with you for over twenty-four hours, and he needed a shower bad,” she jokes, and I just nod, trying to fight back the tears. I can’t believe I let him walk out of here. Why didn’t I just tell him everything?
“Oh.”
She sits up straight again, and her gaze bores into me. “Wait, is there something going on between the two of you?”
Not anymore.
“No.”
“Addy,” she warns, glaring at me.
I sigh, throwing my hands up and instantly regretting it as pain punches my body. “I don’t know, okay? This morning I would have said yes but then he said some things and he left.”
“What did he say?”
“Um, that I needed to take some time and figure out what I really wanted.”
Emma crosses her arms over her chest again and shoots a look at me that I know all too well. She won’t leave this room until she has every ounce of information that she wants. “And why would he say that?”
“Well, maybe because I kind of pulled a Tucker on him,” I say, and she blinks at me before bursting into laughter.
“Did you just use Tucker’s name as a verb?”
“Yeah. You got the gist of what happened without me having to spell it all out for you.”
“Oh my God, that’s gonna make him so mad. I love it. But wait, why did you do that to Trey?”
I shake my head, still kind of wondering that myself. “It wasn’t intentional. I wanted to let him in and tell him all about my mom but each time I tried, there was always an excuse, and then all this stuff with Kyle started happening, and it complicated everything. And now, I think I’ve lost him.”
“Do you know what he told the nurse when he showed up here?” she asks, a soft smile back on her face, and I shake my head. “He told her that he was your fiancé. At the time, I thought he was just lying to get us all back to see you but…maybe not.”
“He told me he loves me just before he left,” I admit, and she grins.
“And do you love him? Do you want to be joined in mawage?” she asks, quoting The Princess Bride, one of our favorite movies, and I laugh.
