I couldn’t stop seeing those details. They played on a loop in my mind as we rode the path to revenge. Those details fueled me, pushed me forward until we parked in a dark alley behind Vulture’s house.

We entered through the back door just after two in the morning, his flimsy lock was no match for Rook’s lock-picking skills. Once inside, my gaze flicked to the empty living room. Rook was at my side, clearing the kitchen. We went room to room, silently clearing every one of them until we reached the bedroom in back.

Rook took one side of the bed and I took the other. He nodded, telling me, this is your show, brother, and folded his arms.

I picked up the glass of warm beer on the table beside him and dumped it over his head.

Vulture woke up angry and swinging at nothing in particular. He cleared the beer and sleep from his eyes, and I clocked the moment he realized he was in deep shit. There was a flash of fear before he covered it with arrogant defiance. “What the fuck are you doing in my house?”

I grinned, gun gripped tight in my hand at my side. “I’m just here to ask a few questions and then I’ll be on my way.”

He sat a little taller. “Well I ain’t got shit to say so you can fuck off the way you came.”

“In a minute,” I promised, my tone calm despite my anger.

He looked at me and then Rook, sighed and threw his arms in the air. “Fine! What the fuck do you want to know?”

“What do you know about Magnolia?”

His brows dipped. “Rex’s woman?”

I nodded, my jaw clenched tight in anticipation.

“Don’t know much about her. It was before my time, and nobody really talks about her much.”

“What do you know, then?”

He blew out a heavy sigh and shook his head. “The official story is that she died but some of the old heads in the MC say she just fuckin’ disappeared. That’s all I know.”

“And the double books? Are you helpin’ Rex defraud the MC?”

Confusion flashed in his eyes before he covered it with a smirk. “Bullshit.”

I stared at him for a long time, weighing the sincerity of his words against my cynicism. The jury was still out, so I moved on. “What about Ivy, why did Rex send you to hurt her?”

This time, the asshole laughed. It was genuine amusement that set my fucking teeth on edge. “‘Cause the dumb bitch wasn’t giving him any intel on your fuckers.” He shook his head like I was too slow to get it.

Something about him calling her a dumb bitch hit me wrong and before I knew what I was doing, I raised the butt of the gun and slammed it down on his head.

“Shit man, what the fuck?”

“That’s my wife,” I answered through a clenched jaw.

Vulture rolled his eyes. “My bad, but what the fuck! Did she think that Rex sent her there out of the kindness of the heart he don’t got?” He shook his head again as another laugh hit the air. “He’s furious and she knows what he’s like when he’s pissed off.”

Yeah, I knew too. “You just let him put his hands on her.” It wasn’t a question that required an answer.

He barked out a laugh. “What happens between a man and his kid is his business.”

“Except she wasn’t a kid,” I shot back for no good reason I could figure out. I didn’t expect him to protect Ivy any more than I expected him to stand up to his President.

“Well she sure as fuck ain’t my business.” He laughed and leaned back against the headboard with a smug expression on his face. “She’s lucky she survived that. She won’t survive whatever Rex plans next.”

That was all I needed to hear. I looked at Rook who handed me the sledgehammer with a blank expression. My fingers wrapped around the smooth wooden handle and let the weight of it settle against my palm.

Vulture’s eyes flashed big and then settled. “You killin’ me won’t stop Rex.”

I grinned and raised the sledgehammer up over my shoulder. “This here tonight? It’s not about stopping Rex,” I said and swung it hard until the steel head connected with his kneecap.
