Their Fierce Little Monster

Is this what it’d be like to live with them? Hanging around in very few clothes and not running for our lives. As soon as the thought appears, I squish the life out of it, annoyed with myself for even thinking such things. What’s wrong with me?

“So much for letting me have the bed to myself,” I say sarcastically.

“Good morning to you too,” Corvin murmurs, his voice croaky.

Lian winks my way, his dark hair sticking up on one side of his head. He’s in his monster form, and I should be repelled, terrified, but my knees are softening. I must have hit my head or something.

His eyes light up as he strolls over and drags me against his side, my face pressed into his ribs and armpit. “Loved every moment of it.” He kisses the top of my head.

“Hey,” I protest, shoving him away, then pat my hair down.

A knock comes at the door.

Corvin cracks his neck and heads over to crank it open.

Insy stands in the hallway, alongside Corvin’s aide. Yes, she’s alive. Well, sort of.

“About time!” Insy makes a frustrated exhale. “I’ve been knocking on your door, Dawn, for the past ten minutes, but I should have known you took both warriors to bed with you last night. Trust me, girl, I would have done the same in your shoes.” She winks at me and strolls into the room, holding the aide by her hand and bringing her too.

“Um, no! I just didn’t want to sleep in my bed where…” I glance at the reincarnated girl standing inches from Corvin, staring up at him. “Where something happened.”

“Yes, yes,” Insy says, not even listening to me. “Now, Corvin, your aide is back, and everyone is happy. Scratch did an amazing job, didn’t he? He even stitched up the wound on her chest.”

“My lord, I’ve returned. You must have missed me,” the aide says. “Also, you can now call me Eve.”

Something is definitely different about her. She’s smiling for a change and not just existing. And she seems to love staring at Corvin.

“She has a name now?” he asks, lifting a brow. “I thought they were all just called aides.”

Insy rubs the back of her neck. “Well, I did tell you they don’t always come back exactly the same. But she has no memories of what happened. All she seems to recall is you, Corvin. She shouted your name when she reanimated. How good is that?”

Corvin gives her a deadpan stare. “Sounds terrible.”

“At least she’s back,” I say. “One less thing to worry about.”

“Not even death can keep us apart,” Eve mutters, and Lian bursts out laughing.

“Fuck you. This is all because of you,” Corvin snaps.

“Make it easy, then,” Lian murmurs, wiping the tears from his eyes. “Eve is yours; Dawn’s all mine.”

“I would like that.” Eve bats her eyes at Corvin.

“I’ll destroy you, Lian,” he thunders.

“Just focus on Eve, lover boy,” Lian coos.

“If anything, we should clear our heads and forget the last few days even happened,” I suggest, feeling as the pair are about to get into another argument.

“Not going to happen, sweetheart,” Lian replies.

“Oh, oh,” Insy says, staring at all of us. “They’re fighting for you, Dawn? Do you know how hot this is?”

“It’s really not,” I say, but she’s already bouncing over to me, taking my hand, and dragging me to the couch. “Listen, I just wanted to say a huge thank-you for helping me with Scratch. I’ve been lingering around his place for so long, too scared to just go tell him how I felt, and I had no idea he was watching me outside either. But thanks, because now”—she lifts her hand with the gorgeous gold bracelet and ring—“I’m going to get married.” She squeals and spins on the spot, then throws herself at me, and we hug.

“I’m so happy for you,” I say, and after a long moment, I pull away.

“Anyway, I have something for you, but I’ll come over a bit later to take you there. Just to say thank you.”
