“I was curious if he was following the law. That developer asshole will need to rezone the land. By local law, they have to hold public forums.”

“And is he?” My mind spun as I came up with ways to stop him. If he was breaking the law, that would make it easier.

“For now. It’s planned for tomorrow.”

I frowned. “Why has nothing been posted about it? He’s not in the Facebook group, but we could have easily added it.”

Marjorie crossed her arms. “Why do you think? Obviously, he doesn’t want people to know so people don’t oppose it.”

I groaned. “Fucking dick.”

“Look, whoever this is, he’s trying to make sure it’s happening.”

“Shit.”

“We need to make it clear that we oppose this.”

“We need this to be a surprise.” I bit my lip.

“The Facebook group is always a good option.”

I thought about it and then shook my head. “No. Not in the group. There are profiles in there that I don’t recognize. They could have connections to Toby.”

“We can’t even trust our group now?” She sighed. “We need to clean that thing out.”

“I’ll talk to Kerry about it. After I get through this. We want there to be a wave of people at this town forum so that they get alarmed.”

“Got it. I’ll round everyone up. That’s the best thing about being old, I know the old ways of communication.”

“And I’ll . . .” I paused, not sure what else I could do.

“Enjoy your man.”

“I . . . We’re not—”

“I know, but I’ll still say enjoy the time he’s here.” She smiled but then paused. “Does he know?”

I shook my head. “No, and I don’t want him to be dragged into this when he’s leaving soon.”

“Fair enough. He likes us, but he’s always had eyes for you and only you.”

I nodded. “I know. Hell would freeze over before he cared about this stuff. We’ll handle it.”

“We always have the STM grant.”

“I want to see what we can do before we bring them in.”

“Still nothing on that?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “One day I’ll figure it out, but the spring is more important.”

“You’re right. We can crack the STM grant code at some other point.”

“If it’s even possible.”

“We’ve got this.” Marjorie sounded so sure, but I wasn’t sure I was. The idea of losing something so close to me was terrifying.

I smiled and nodded anyway. It helped to have someone be somewhat calm around me. If they believed it, then maybe one day I would too.
