“It’s mine?” The question leaves my mouth before I realize it might be insulting.
Pain flashes across her face. “Yes.”
I close my eyes for half a second.
“Fuck.”
Her expression changes immediately, and I realize what that sounded like.
“No.” I shake my head and step closer. “No, that was not—”
I stop myself before I make this worse by talking too fast.
Blair looks away. “You're the only person it could be.”
I whip my head back to her. “What? You weren’t a— No, you were—”
“I don't mean I was a virgin, Diego,” she says. “I just mean the time frame. It's been too long since anyone else.” She throws a hand out toward me. “You're the only one it could be.”
I drag one hand over my mouth and try to get my thoughts into some semblance of order. There are too many of them, and none are staying in place long enough to examine.
A baby.
My baby.
With Blair.
I look at her again.
“Six weeks.”
“Yes,” she whispers.
I think back to the morning I woke with her in my arms and had no idea that anything about that night might still be… developing without either of us knowing.
“And you’ve been carrying this around by yourself for days?”
Her lips purse. “I needed to be sure before I told you. I was trying to find the right time, and then I realized there was no right time.”
I nod slowly.
That makes sense.
Actually, no, nothing makes sense anymore.
My gaze drops again, not quite to her stomach this time but somewhere in the space between us. I have never pictured myself here.
Well, that's not quite true. I did picture myself here someday, but it's a moment I thought was long gone. A future that never came to fruition for me.
Now that future is here in a fitted skirt and impossible heels and is standing in my living room looking terrified.
Blair hugs herself again.
That pulls me back to her.
I have spent weeks trying to get her back into this penthouse and into my bed, and she has spent at least part of that time wondering how to tell me she is carrying my child.
The imbalance of those realities makes me feel slightly insane.
