His mouth twists bitterly.
“And I wanted one more day before I risked you walking away.”
My heart aches.
“That wasn't fair.”
“No.”
“You took the choice away from me.”
“I know.”
He lifts his gaze.
“I won't do that again.”
“You can't promise you'll never hurt me.”
“No.”
His answer is immediate.
“But I can promise I'll do better. And I will never give up on us.”
Something about that breaks through the last of my anger.
Not all the hurt. That's still there.
Maybe it will be for a while. But the anger?
It's harder to hold on to with him sitting here looking at me like this.
“I don't want to hate you, Mitchell.”
His face changes. Actually fucking crumples for half a second before he catches it.
“Do you hate me?”
Oh God. He looks broken.

He looks terrified of my answer.
“I admit I’ve tried to.”
His fingers tighten around mine.
“For a minute, maybe I did.”
He goes completely still.
