“Yes.”
“Then why does Myrna get to decide whether you finish it?”
My eyes narrow.
“This isn't about Myrna.”
“Bullshit,” Carolina says.
“Helpful.”
“I'm serious.”
She sits across from me.
“You wanted to know why Mitchell bought the Rovers.”
“Yes.”
“You found out.”
I look away. Because she’s right. I did.
Goddammit.
“And then,” Dani adds quietly, “someone published lies about his grandfather.”
My stomach knots.
“They weren't all lies.”
“No?”
“The connections existed. The conclusions didn't.”
Three faces turn toward me. I sigh.
“I checked everything.”
“Of course you did,” Carolina says. “Because you are a good reporter.”
“I spent hours on it. Garrison Knight knew powerful people. Politicians. Businessmen. Foreign leaders. Some of them have reputations now that make those old photographs look ugly.”
“But?”
“But that's all they are.”
I rub my forehead.
“Photographs. Dinners. Events. Trade groups. There isn't evidence supporting what that article implied. I couldn't find anything showing Garrison financed persecution or built the Knight fortune through those regimes.”
Carolina's expression goes very still.
“So the article is wrong.”
“The article is irresponsible.”
“Same difference.”
