The Duke who Chose her

"They see every glance, hear every murmur, and trade in the private lives of their masters as though it were currency at a market. A parlor maid was dismissed from your presence in a state of visible distress, doors were bolted shut in haste, and by noon, the servants' hall was already alive with speculation regarding what Her Grace was so intent on concealing from the household."

Helena clenched her hands into tight fists within the folds of her silk skirts, her chest rising and falling rapidly. She lifted her chin stubbornly, refusing to cower beneath his superior height or his scathing tone.

"And what has this world been saying?" she challenged.

George stopped pacing. "Only that my wife spent the afternoon talking about me to every ear who would listen. They were satisfying stories, I presume, given the caliber of the audience."

"Lady Theodora is my dearest friend, Your Grace," Helena stated. "She is not some gossiping stranger seeking scandal for entertainment. She cares for my well-being and my peace of mind, a consideration I am rarely afforded within the walls of this cold, unwelcoming manor."

"It matters not what her intentions are or how deeply you trust her." George snapped, his deep voice cutting through the quiet room like an iron blade. "Lady Theodora moves in the very heart of London society. She has a mother, a sister, and a score of acquaintances who very likely thrive upon the faintest word of noble misfortune. Do you have any true conception of the delicate precipice upon which our reputation currently rests?"

Helena lifted her chin. "Both matter. If you cannot trust me to choose a friend, how can you trust me to raise your nephew? How can you trust me to follow your orders and create this pretense you so desire?"

He closed the distance between them with slow strides, his polished leather boots striking the floorboards with heavy thuds.

"You already know how society views us. The rakish Duke and the overnight Duchess. Do you think we have the luxury of forgiving eyes? Every single one of them is looking for a reason, a cause, to discredit this union. They are searching for evidence like hungry dogs who have stumbled into a butcher's shop. We cannot afford to risk London having more reasons to gossip. It is in times like these that we must appear the perfect couple, the Duke and Duchess of Cavendish in everyday truth."

Helena laughed bitterly; a sound so filled with sorrow that it halted George in his tracks. She turned away from him briefly, taking two agitated steps toward the window before spinning back around to face him.

"Society has controlled me my entire life. It has ruled my every walking day. First, when I was Lady Witherford, a lady in my father's house and shadowed by my brother. Then when I lost my title, fighting for my place with every passing day and only finding succor in the embrace of Lady Theodora and late Lady Charlotte. And now that I am a duchess, it still desires to restrict and orchestrate my being. But what is even more saddening is that I now have another ruler."

The air in the study grew impossibly thick, the space between them shrinking until every breath felt heavy. A ruler? he thought. She stands there accusing me of tyranny, completely blind to the fact that I am the one bound in chains! She has no idea of the restraint required to keep myself from taking what is legally and rightfully mine.

"What ruler are you talking about?" George asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.

Helena closed the distance between them until she was standing mere inches from his chest. She was forced to tilt her head back to look into his eyes, her eyes flashing with defiance.

"You, Your Grace. You rule me, don't you?"

The accusation echoed, striking George at the very core of his pride. Within him, something fundamental shattered: the fragile link of the heavy chain that held his fierce desires in check. The cold and calculating Duke of Cavendish evaporated, replaced by a man consumed by an overwhelming, primal need to break Helena's stubborn defiance and claim the woman who had tormented his thoughts for months.

His gaze moved over her body, taking in every inch of her dress, heels and royal elegance. He stared at her with a fire in his eyes that threatened to burn even him, but Helena refused to look away, offering him a direct, dangerous challenge that practically dared him to lose his self-control.

The tempo of the room slowed to a suffocating crawl. George lowered his head again, his gaze drifting down from her fierce eyes to settle upon the soft, pink curve of her lips.

.

He leaned down further, bringing his face so close to hers that his warm breath brushed across her flushed cheek. His voice vibrated with raw intensity that made her entire body tremble.

"I was raised to rule, Helena. Bred to it. Have you never thought that perhaps I wish to discard rulership? To see if someone would come to me because I asked, not because I demanded?"

Helena's breath hitched sharply, her lips parting in a silent gasp as the weight of his confession hit her. Yet, even in the face of his overwhelming presence, her pride refused to surrender. She lifted her chin a fraction of an inch higher, her voice trembling slightly.

"Then why do you refrain, Your Grace?" she whispered, her voice a fragile, breathless thread in the quiet room. "If you desire affection rather than submission, why do you hide behind cold rules, distant silence, and legal contracts?"

George stared down at her, his breathing heavy and ragged. His hands, clenched tightly at his sides, strained until his knuckles turned pale. The temptation to reach out, to cradle back of her elegant neck in his comfortably wide palm, and to crush her mouth beneath his was so strong it caused a physical ache in his chest.

Playing with fire, he thought. And I do not know which of us is flame and which is fuel.

He shifted his weight, leaning in until his lips were mere millimeters from hers, his voice dropping into a dark murmur that vibrated against her skin.

"Do you want to see what happens when I finally break my rules?"

"And here I believed the rules were all that mattered to you. Would you break them so easily, Your Grace?"

"Try me, duchess, and see."
