Torch’s Wildfire

His eyes meet mine.

“Please,” I whisper. “He's not worth it.”

For a moment, I don't know if he'll listen.

Then he lowers his hand.

Grim and Striker haul my father to his feet. Striker restrains him while Grim keeps an eye on the other man.

Torch gets up and comes straight to me.

I don't wait.

I throw myself into his arms.

He catches me, holding me so tightly I can feel his heart hammering against mine.

“Got you, wildfire,” he murmurs. “I've got you.”

I bury my face in his chest.

“I was scared.”

“I know, sweetheart.”

“I thought he was going to kill you.”

Torch presses his mouth to my hair.

“Not leaving you that easily.”

I cling to him while the tears finally come.

The police arrive not long afterward.

Grim called them once the brothers had the building secured. The two men are taken into custody, and Striker hands over the video threat.

Torch tells me the rest while we sit in the club SUV.

“The cab driver called the police. Striker got hold of the cab company's records, and Vex worked out which van intercepted you. One of our contacts found a connection to a business involved in the old fire.”

“This warehouse?”

“Yeah. We were already looking into that company. Then your father sent me the address himself.”

I shake my head.

“He practically led you here.”

“Thought I'd come alone.”

“And the envelope?”

“Copies. Enough to keep him interested while Grim and the boys got into position.”

I look back at the warehouse.

“My father really did set that fire.”
