“Could you say it again? I may never get another chance.”

Despite everything, I nearly smile.

“We're moving somewhere safe.”

Her amusement vanishes.

“We?”

“Me and you.”

“And when were you planning to ask me?”

“Right now.”

“Sounds suspiciously like you've already decided.”

“Grim wants us moved. I agree with him. Somebody tried to kill me, and you nearly died instead.”

She looks away.

For a moment, the sharp remarks disappear.

When she speaks again, her voice is quieter.

“I thought I was dying.”

Fuck.

I lean forward.

“Madison.”

“I couldn't make my legs work. I remember trying to reach the door, and then everything went strange.”

I want to pull her into my arms.

Instead, I stay where I am.

“I'm sorry.”

She looks back at me.

“Fine. I'll go to the safe house. But I want to know where we're going.”

“Fair.”

“And I want you to tell me when something changes.”

“I can do that.”

She considers me.

“Good. Now we're making progress.”

Christ, I want to kiss her again.

Razor clears Madison to travel an hour later, with orders to rest and report any returning symptoms.
