I bark out a laugh and Ezra glares at her. “I do not.”
“See?” She gestures towards him. “Charming.”
I like her more every minute. Probably unfortunate.
Another scream comes from the corn… only closer this time. And that ends the conversation.
I turn and see something white moving between the stalks. The others can’t see it yet but I can.
Reaper.
The Harvest changed our senses differently. Malakai hears the land. Ezra feels the rites. I see what moves through them. And something is moving.
“House.” I say.
Ezra snaps his head toward me. “You see them?”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
I count.
One. Three. Six and more behind them.
“Enough.”
Malakai stands. His hand never leaves Sage. “The Bride’s are waking.”
Sage laughs. “Could we stop calling them that?”
“No.” Malakai says.
She looks at him. “Fan-fucking-tastic.”
Sage watches me as I pull my mask down.
Her expression changes from worry to fear to something else entirely. I felt it in the maze. She liked being chased. Not because she wanted to be afraid… because she knew it was a game… she knew I wouldn’t hurt her.
That distinction matters… especially now.
“Stay between us,” I tell her.
She looks at my mask. “You’re giving orders now too?”
“Yes.”
“I hate all of you.”
“Not all of us.” I chuckle as I watch her eyes flick toward Malakai and of course he looks pleased.
Bastard.
I point at him. “Don’t get smug.”
“I kissed her.”
Sage groans. “Can we PLEASE stop announcing that?”
