I see them for barely a second.
Trees standing in perfect lines beneath a moonless sky.
Branches heavy with apples so dark they’re almost black.
The vision disappears.
I stagger backward.
Ezra catches me. “Sage.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not.”
“I said I’m fine.”
Then something strikes the ground beside my foot.
Tick.
All four of us look down.
A seed lies in the dirt.
Not the one in my hand.
That one is still clenched inside my fist.
This one is different.
Smooth.
Dark brown.
Wet.
Malakai crouches beside it.
“Don’t touch it.” Ezra warns.
Malakai stops.
Rhett looks between the seed and me.
“Did Cornelius just have a baby?”
“Shut the fuck up.”
“I’m asking a legitimate question.”
Ezra isn’t listening to either of us.
He’s staring at the seed.
All the color has drained from his face.
My amusement disappears.
