I look at him. “You counted?”

”I’ve been bored.”

”Did it make you chase her?”

His gaze sharpens. “No.”

“Then what did it do?”

Twenty-nine. Forever fucking twenty-nine.

He looks toward the lights beyond the maze. “I needed to chase her.”

“That’s worse.”

He gives me a small shrug, but there’s tension beneath it. “Depends on who you ask.”

“This isn’t a joke.”

“I know.”

“Yes.”

Something in the way he says it makes my stomach tighten.

He looks toward the path she took, his jaw working before he finally speaks again. “She smelled like them.”

Everything inside me goes still.

“No.”

“Ezra.”

I shake my head before he can say anything else.. “No. No fucking way.”

His expression hardens. “You asked.”

“She can’t.”

“She did.”

I shake my head again. “The McBrides are gone.”

“Apparently not.”

“They left.” The words come faster now, my pulse climbing with each one. “They fucking disappeared.”

”One must have survived.”
