“No.”
“Was something forcing me?”
“No.”
My fingers go cold around Malakai’s.
I would almost rather she said yes. At least then it wouldn’t be my choice.
“Then why the fuck would I go?”
Mariah hesitates. “You were smiling.”
My breath catches halfway into my lungs.
“No.”
“You looked happy, Sage.”
“Stop.”
“And the three of them were on their knees.”
“Stop.”
I don’t want to hear another fucking word. But apparently, I hate not knowing even more. “What happened to me?”
Mariah looks at my stomach. Only for a second. That’s all it takes.
My abdomen clenches so hard it hurts. I tear my hand from Malakai’s and press both palms against myself, suddenly hyperaware of every sensation beneath them.
Every breath.
Every twitch.
Every fucking pulse.
“No.”
“Sage…”
“What happened to me?”
“I don’t know.”
“Bullshit.”
“I swear.”
“Then tell me what you fucking saw!”
Her face crumples. “You came back.”
My hands slowly fall away. “What?”
“You climbed out of the field.”
