“Yes,” Clara says.
“No,” I say at the same time.
Her head whips toward me. “One bed.”
“I can count.”
“We have rules.”
“I remember.”
“Rule two.”
“No sleeping together.”
“Exactly.”
I hand the clerk my credit card.
Clara grabs my wrist. “What are you doing?”
“Getting us out of the lobby.”
“We can’t share a bed.”
“Sure we can.”
Her eyes widen.
I lean down. “Relax, librarian. You made your rules very clear.”
Her fingers are still wrapped around my wrist. I glance at them.

The clerk slides two key cards across the counter. I take them and Clara follows me toward the stairs. “You’re sleeping on the floor.”
“No.”
“The chair?”
“No.”
“Then where are you sleeping?”
I stop at the bottom of the stairs and she nearly walks into me. I turn and her eyes lift to mine. “The bed.”
“With me?”
“It’s a king.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
I step closer.
She steps back.
