“You’re looking at me like you’re reconsidering rule two.”

I yank my hand away. “I was not.”

“Sure.”

His phone rings. Saved by technology.

Ryder checks the screen and then his expression changes. “I need to take this.” He stands and walks toward the window. “Hale.”

I start putting away the coffee mugs.

Then stop when I hear him say, “What property?” His shoulders stiffen. “The Indian is still there?” Another pause. “Yeah. Send me the address.”

He hangs up.

I wait but he doesn’t say anything. “What happened?”

“Estate attorney.”

“Your dad?”

He nods then eventually he says, “He left me his Indian.”

“The motorcycle?”

“1948 Indian Chief. Been in the family forever.”

Something in his voice makes me set down the mug. “Where is it?”

“Old Hale property near Phantom Ridge.”

I blink. “Phantom Ridge?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s near the Phantom River Resort.”

He checks his phone again. “I need to get out there before Friday.”

“The wedding at the resort starts Friday.”

“I know.”

“When were you planning to go?”

“Tomorrow.”

My stomach does something stupid.

Tomorrow.

Ryder.

Motorcycle.

Mountain road.

I should keep my mouth shut.
