I sigh.
An undignified response from the woman I’ve loved for five extraordinary years.
Our daughter sits proudly in my lap, wearing a purple princess dress and an enormous pair of butterfly wings.
I’m seated on the nursery floor.
My fingernails are pink.
My face is decorated with glitter.
And a sparkling plastic crown rests upon my head.
Calla leans against the doorframe.
“You know, you’re aware you used to rule entire civilizations, right?”
I lift my chin.
“I still do.”
“Really?”
I gesture toward our daughter.
“Her kingdom is considerably more demanding.”
Calla laughs harder.
Our daughter claps.
“Mommy! Daddy pretty!”
“Very pretty, sweetheart.”
Calla pulls out her phone.
I narrow my eyes.
“Do not.”
She grins.
“Oh, I’m absolutely taking a picture.”
“Calla.”
“Your Divine Hotness.”
I sigh.
She snaps the photograph.
Then another.
And another.
“These are going straight into the family album.”
