‘So, haven’t taken it forward any time?’

‘A couple of times, but girls get romantic pretty quickly.’

‘So, you don’t like romance?’

‘I like it a lot, every guy does.’

‘Then take things forward, what’s stopping you? Let the girl get romantic as quickly as she can.’

‘I get turned off too, when it becomes romantic.’

‘No worries, give it some time.’

‘I am doing exactly that. Can you have an affair with me?’

‘Never!’

‘Why?’

‘You don’t get romantic soon enough, na, that’s why!’

‘The one who gets romantic too quickly doesn’t suit you; the one who takes his own sweet time doesn’t suit you. What’s up with you?’

‘It’s all about romance with timing. Now come on, show me your phone.’

‘I can’t show you my mobile.’

‘Why? What’s in there?’

‘There’s nothing in there like that, that’s why.’

Chandar had moved on from his old love story. Sudha had moved on, too, a long time ago, but that vague feeling of incompleteness lingered. Moving on, normalizing with time, weathering through the biggest crises, these things are what turn us into beasts.

‘You loved her very much, didn’t you?’

‘Very much love? What does that mean? I loved her, that’s it.’

‘I mean, you loved her, couldn’t live without her … blah blah blah.’

‘What’s this “blah blah blah”?’

‘I don’t know. A person becomes blah blah blah when in love. You had sex with her, didn’t you?’

‘That’s a personal question.’

‘Okay, don’t tell me, but you did have it?’

‘Yes.’

‘Was she good? Sorry! Got personal again.’

‘Yes! She was amazing.’

‘And you?’
