The Immortal’s Salvation

Kenton laughed, and Toni wondered if he had any idea what she meant. “Have you ever gone to college?”

The cad. From his expression, Toni was pretty sure she no longer wanted the answer.

“Many times,” he said. “Though I’m glad to hear you will not be.”

“Glad?” She was pretty sure he was the only person in the world who would feel that way. Everyone she loved had been encouraging her to go back to school for years.

“Yes, glad. You didn’t want to go. So you shouldn’t.”

“But how did you know—”

He looked at her as if she’d asked the most obvious question in the world.

“Right.”

She and Alessandra had no secrets from each other. Which meant, as her fiancé, he probably knew a lot about Toni. Which was fine.

“Though I’m sure you didn’t come here to talk to me about my college application.”

“In fact—” he turned back to look at the door, though no one was there, “—no, I didn’t.”

Turning back, he said, “You need to talk him out of it.”

Her throat tightened. He could only be talking about one person.

“Lawrence, he’s on his way. The last thing I want is for him to think I like him. So do me a favor and don’t mention I was here.”

When Kenton turned to leave, she jumped up from her stool.

“Seriously? That’s all you’re giving me?”

He looked back with such pity Toni’s heart lurched. She had no idea what this was about, but instinctively, she knew she wouldn’t like it.

“If I don’t see you before your trip, have fun. And remember what I said in regards to Lawrence.”

What the—

“Oh.” It seemed Kenton was having a difficult time walking away. “Don’t worry so much about Alessandra. Just this morning, she legitimately put me on the floor, though if you repeat it I’ll deny it a hundred times over.”

“Put you on the—”

“We were training.”

“Uh-huh,” she murmured, imagining what those training sessions must look like.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more powerful Cheld at her stage before.” The pride in his voice was unmistakable.

Still curious about Lawrence, Toni allowed herself to be guided away from the topic. “Maybe that’s because you’ve always killed them before you had a chance to find out?” she said, earning a hearty laugh from Kenton.

Only he would laugh about such a thing. And to hear him talk, he was the sensitive brother. Toni hoped she never had the opportunity to meet Drake or Rowan.

Especially Rowan. She’d heard plenty about Kenton’s youngest brother from Alessandra. Ruthless was the word most often associated with him. His hatred of the Cheld ran the deepest of all the Morley siblings.

Thinking of siblings made something occur to her. “How’s Garrett, by the way? I haven’t seen him since he came back to town.”

“Gone already.” Kenton lifted up his hand in dismissal. “That boy has wanderlust worse than Laria’s.”

Gone? That was a quick visit. She’d have to ask Alessandra about it when she could actually reach her.

“Later,” Kenton called out, opening the door.

She watched it close behind him, feeling a little sick. He’d come all this way, the opposite direction of where he was heading, just to tell her to talk him out of it?

Out of what?

Toni had no clue what it might be, but she knew she wouldn’t like it one bit.
