“Yeah, she is.”

He turned to face me, catching the shift in my tone. “Oh?”

I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to.

Liam’s eyes narrowed at me. “Wait.”

I already knew what was coming.

“Hold up,” he said, looking back at Eliana, then at me. “Why do you sound like you know her?”

I drag my hand over my face. “Are you really that dense?” I ask, shaking my head. “I’ve talked to you about my ex before, Liam.”

His mouth falls open. “No fucking way.” He does a double-take. “That’s her?!”

I hold a hand up. “I’m gonna need you to lower your volume before you speak again.”

Liam lets out a sharp laugh. “You’re fucking joking. Only you would have that type of luck.”

“Do I look like I’m joking?”

“This is –” he scratches his jaw. “This is actually insane.”

“Yeah, tell me about it.” I look down at my feet. “Glad you’re enjoying it.”

“Oh, I’m loving it, actually,” he smirks. “That’s the one you –”

“Don’t finish that fucking sentence.” I cut in quickly.

He holds his hands up in defense. “Alright, alright.”

I give him a small nod, my eyes narrowing at him.

“How’s that going for you?”

“Well, considering I almost kicked her out, I would say that we’re doing great!” I say sarcastically.

He wrinkles his nose up. “Wait, what? Why?”

“I had no idea who was going to be living with me for one, and two, I definitely wasn’t planning on her being the one living with me and working on my social media this season,” I explain to him, crossing my arms over my chest. “Would you be fine if the ex-girlfriend you dumped was living in your home?”

“I mean,” he shrugs. “I guess I haven’t been in that situation before, my guy. Though, I can’t imagine it’s ideal.”

“Far from it. And it’s eating me alive.”

“So…” he claps my shoulder. “Now what?”

“I learn to deal with it and pray I don’t fuck everything up.”

He hesitates for a second, his hand still resting on my shoulder. “You still love that girl, don’t you?”

“Depends on your definition of love.”

He shook with a quiet laugh. “You and I have very different definitions of love, my friend. You like the commitment; I don’t like the idea of it. What’s stopping you from going after her?”

I smooth my hands over my jersey, thinking of an answer.

“Well, let’s start with the fact that she’s hired by MLB to work with me. Pretty sure that’s against the rules.” I avoid eye contact with him. “I also don’t know if she feels the same. I don’t want to be the one to voice my feelings and then have them all mean nothing to her.”
