Heartbreak Baby

by Heather Ashley

I devour the first raspberry-filled donut in about three bites, completely ignoring the powdered sugar getting all over my hands and face. Colston takes down three sprinkle donuts like it's an Olympic sport. I watch him reach for a fourth, shuddering internally. He must be one of those guys who actually enjoys working out to burn all this off. Disgusting.

Sumner leans against the counter, drinking his coffee and watching us inhale the sugary deliciousness. He looks way too entertained by the mess I'm making.

But the second the sugar rush peaks, the adrenaline crash finally hits me, and somehow the combo makes me tired for some reason. A massive yawn rips out of me. I cover my mouth, blinking watering eyes.

"Sorry," I mumble, grabbing a napkin to wipe the powdered sugar off my mouth. "Between the lack of sleep and the carb coma, my body is officially waving a white flag."

"You should go home and get some sleep," Sumner says, his tone softening.

"Yeah. I think I have to." I slide off the stool.

The temptation to ask if I can just crash here is agonizing.

But I shake it off. We aren't doing that.

I wave goodbye to Colston, who’s currently chewing his fourth donut. "Thanks for breakfast, Jenny."

"Anytime, Goldie girl," he says with his mouth full. "Drive safe."

Sumner follows me out the front door. We ride the elevator down to the ground floor in silence. The humid air is heavy and wet, clinging to my skin the second we step out of the lobby and into the parking garage.

Without the buffer of Colston's constant banter, an awkwardness settles in the space between us, and I have no idea what to say to break it.

I stop at my car, pressing the unlock button on my fob. The beep breaks the heavy silence in the garage right before I turn to face him.

He’s standing a few feet away, his hands shoved into the pockets of his gym shorts. It’s been too long since I’ve gotten a clear look at him in the daylight. He’s got dark circles under his eyes, like he didn’t sleep at all last night. I don’t blame him because same. He looks exhausted and rough around the edges and so fucking good I want to bite him.

Maybe lick him a little.

I look up at him, and the biggest stupid grin takes over my face again. I can’t hold it back. I close the distance between us and throw my arms around his neck, hugging him tight. Pressing all of my body up against his just because I can.

"We did it," I say, my voice a giddy squeal as I bounce on my toes.

Sumner's arms don’t hesitate to wrap around my waist, pulling me flush against his hard chest. He buries his face in my hair, exhaling a long, shaky breath. "We did."

I pull back just enough to look at his face. “Tin roof. Rusted.”

He eyes me, his brow furrowing. “I don’t know what that means.”

I laugh. “Love Shack?”

“Uhhh…”

“Oh my god, seriously? The song? You know… you’re what? Tiiin roof. Rusted,” I sing, and I sing it horribly, but I’m just so happy I don't care.

He blinks at me and then shakes his head, grinning. “Nope.”

“Wow. Remind me to play it for you.”

“Will it sound like… that?"

I glare at him, but I’m fighting my grin. “Like what exactly?”

“Never mind.” Maybe our baby will get his intelligence because clearly he’s a smart man.

His eyes turn serious again as his hands slide to my hips. His palms are huge and warm, his thumbs pressing into my skin. "I told you I'd give you a baby."

The sheer, unapologetic pride in his voice is so hot my knees tremble, and for a second I think they might give out. We stay glued together by my car door, sharing this insane secret. We both got totally fucked over by our exes, and we somehow beat the odds to get exactly what we wanted anyway.
