Heartbreak Baby

I pull out my phone, find a same-day cleaning service online, and book someone to come later.

Then I strip off my wrinkled clothes and step into the shower. The hot water feels incredible on my sore muscles, though washing between my legs makes me wince. Turns out spending most of the night and half the morning getting railed has consequences.

Worth it.

I grin while I wash my hair, and then my hand drifts down over my stomach.

Holy shit.

There could be a baby in there.

I’ve wanted to be a mom for as long as I can remember. Growing up with a single mom who worked her ass off to give me everything she could, I always pictured doing it differently when it was my turn. I wanted the loud house. Kids everywhere and the money to be able to give them everything I didn’t have. Somebody beside me in the middle of all the chaos.

I thought Grant was going to be that person.

Thank fuck he wasn't.

Walking in on him balls-deep in his coworker was the universe doing me a solid. Because if I hadn't caught him, I probably would have had his baby.

And then I would’ve been tied to a man who cheats on me, trashes my house when he gets caught, and runs away so he doesn’t have to deal with the fallout.

What a catch.

Instead, I did something completely fucking insane with a stranger.

And I don’t regret a second of it.

My hand drifts over my stomach again. If Sumner’s swimmers did their job last night, my whole life is about to change.

I step out of the bathroom feeling significantly less like roadkill and start thinking about what I’m doing with the rest of my day.

Then it hits me.

Crap.

No drinking until I know if I’m pregnant.

Mocktails it is.

I pull on a neon pink, sheer mesh maxi skirt over a matching bikini bottom, pairing it with a cropped vintage band tee and chunky platform sandals. It's exactly the kind of loud outfit Grant would’ve rolled his eyes at.

I check myself out in the mirror, and yeah. I look fucking fantastic.

Drag Me to Brunch is about to start, so I grab my oversized sunglasses, lock the door behind me, and head back out to meet my girls.

The Tipsy Mermaid’s already packed when I walk in. Music is blasting, somebody near the bar is wearing enough sequins to blind me, and every table is crowded with people yelling over each other and waving down servers for another round.

I spot my girls crammed into our usual corner booth and slide in beside Ellie.

Her eyes narrow immediately. "Why do you look so happy? Your entire life blew up yesterday."

"I feel amazing." I grab one of the sticky laminated menus.

Before anyone can interrogate me, Cherry Poppins, our favorite six-foot-something queen in a bright red wig, a sequined bodysuit, and heels even I couldn’t pull off, struts over to the table.

She gives me a slow once-over. “There she is. I heard the boyfriend got promoted to ex. Love that for you.”

The girls have obviously been filling Cherry in while they waited for me to show up.
