I hope it’s the second one.
But I know her. She’s definitely glued to the TV.
And if she realized something went wrong and they can’t track us, she’s probably scared out of her mind right now.
I hate that I’m the reason she’s stressed, especially this far along.
More than anything, I want to hear her voice, make sure she’s okay, make sure the baby’s still where they’re supposed to be, and tell her I’m coming home.
There’s nothing I can do for Goldie from up here, so I keep flying and try not to think about how long it’ll be before I can call her.
My overthinking’s interrupted when Brian’s voice comes through my headset.
“Mission link’s back. We’re transmitting again.”
Colston looks over at me, and some of the tension in his body eases as he sinks back into his seat.
“Make sure AOC knows we aborted,” I say.
“Already sent it.”
Des pops into the conversation. “They’ve got us returning.”
Good.
At least information from the airplane is getting back to the ground again.
If Goldie’s been watching any of it, she might see that we’ve turned away from Ruth and are headed back toward Florida.
She still won’t know what happened in there, but hopefully seeing us moving in the right direction will keep her from completely losing her shit until I can call.
That takes some of the pressure off my chest.
Ruth is behind us now, still tearing across the Gulf toward Louisiana while we put more distance between us and the storm.
Colston lets out a tired laugh and shakes his head. “I can’t believe we did that.”
I look over at him and hold out my fist for him to bump. “Wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else, bud.”
He gives me a lopsided grin. “I knew you loved me the most.”
I roll my eyes and look back out the window toward home. After that, neither of us says anything.
We don’t really need to.
Tomorrow, I’ll probably be able to appreciate what we just did.
Right now, I’ve had enough hurricane for one fucking day.
I’m ready to get home.
CHAPTER 38
GOLDIE
By the time Trace and the girls leave, we know Sumner and Colston are safely on the ground in Lakeland.
The next thing I really register is the sound of Sumner’s truck pulling into the driveway.
