I open my eyes once more, smiling up at Dean. “I was right, you’re a seer. Do you ever have random moments of deja vu that you can’t seem to explain?”
“Yes,” he says slowly, letting go of our hands. “Doesn’t everyone?”
“Do you ever remember your dreams?”
“No. Never.”
“That’s your ability. You can see the future when you’re dreaming. If you got yourself an enchanted enhancer, you’d be able to remember your dreams when you woke up,” I explain.
“Or you can just hang out with me more,” Nix says excitedly. “I can be your personal enhancer. Well, maybe if I wasn’t so busy traveling.”
The comment stings more than I have words to explain. Is he just making a joke or does Nix actually feel a connection to Dean already? Does he want to give up traveling the country with me? Does he want to immediately settle down with Dean?
Oh fuck, they’re both staring at me. What the fuck did I miss?
“Huh?”
Hazel giggles. “I asked if you guys have dinner plans. I could cook for you, to say thank you for your services?”
I look at Nix with wide eyes, trying to convey how much I don’t want to do that. Thankfully, he’s always been able to read me.
“I’m so sorry, but we already have plans tonight.”
“That’s a shame,” Hazel says, looking really disappointed.
“I have magic,” Dean breathes out, barely loud enough for us to hear. “All this time, I told myself I didn’t have anything and I was okay with that, but now you’re telling me I actually have magic?”
Nix gently pats Dean’s shoulder. “You have magic, man. It’s really cool magic, too.”
Dean gives Nix a small, soft smile. “Thank you.”
Well fuck me sideways. Of course they look so soft and perfect together. I feel like I could scream.
Nix is my best friend and I love him so deeply it makes it hard to breathe. It would be wrong of me to stand in the way of true love. I can’t just keep him to myself, no matter how much I want to.
No, I’ll make this happen. I’ll make sure Nix gets his perfect love story even if it kills me inside.
I take out a business card and quickly write my phone number down on it. Then I slide it over to Hazel. She takes it wordlessly, throwing a wink my way.
“It was really nice to meet you,” I say, sitting down in my chair. I rub at my temples, trying to will the headache forming behind my eyes away.
Nix leads the two out of the room and then stops at our security, letting them know we need a quick break without me even having to tell him. He closes the door and then sits down next to me. He turns my head gently with his hands and then starts to undo my braid.
“Headache?”
“Mhmm,” I hum, letting my head fall back as he rubs at my temples. I’m going to miss this. I’m going to miss the soft touches, the simple way we exist together. I’m going to miss my best friend when he runs off with his one true love. Tears prickle at my eyes but I blink them away, forcing myself to keep it together until we can get back to our hotel room. Then I can hide in the shower and allow myself to fully shatter where Nix can’t see.
“Do you want to stop for the day? We could come back tomorrow?”
“I just need a moment. I’ll be okay.”
“If you say so,” Nix says softly. He runs his fingers through my hair before tying it in a loose ponytail at the base of my skull. “Hey, what did you think of Hazel and Dean? They seemed really nice, right?”
“Yeah,” I force myself to say, the words tasting like bile. “Dean seemed really, really nice.”
“I thought so too,” Nix says with a grin. Then he stands up and lets Mars and Finn know they can send in the next person.
