I still wasn’t sure why he’d been dragging his feet so much but it could only be mate related and that meant it was going to be confusing.
Everything with bonding was more confusing than I’d expected.
I kept those thoughts to myself as Daddy huffed, though. “Because it is my job.”
Did he just think that was his job because he was a drama queen brat of a switch who didn’t understand that yet because of his society? Was it actually part of his job description? Just something he wanted to be true, so he’d told himself it too many times?
The brain could do amazing things…especially with our species.
I was kind of curious about how Master would respond, but before he could come up with a ridiculous response, we got to the meeting and they both went quiet.
Manners were very important…and so was listening to Agent Murphy when he got that look on his face.
It was stressful enough that I automatically stepped back between my mates and let them close the gap in front of me. But I listened carefully because he was never as angry as he looked. “Do not ask the old dragon if he sold his soul to the Devil or a demon or to the ancestors or anything else offensive.”
Maybe he was as angry as he looked this time?
What were we doing?
Before I could figure that out, I heard Wren speak up. “Um. I need to be put at the back of the group.”
His admission was actually really funny but I was too confused to laugh. I was definitely going to let Daddy be a pain in the butt and demand answers for any meeting changes going forward…and Master’s quiet sigh said he would agree with me.
Toman glanced at his mate, looking very serious. “I think that is a good idea.”
Whatever he got from Wren said they needed to move to the back of the group right now because they quickly shifted to come stand by us as the rest laughed.
It didn’t give Agent Murphy confidence about their behavior, though, because his expression got more serious. “I will tattle to Boyd, Talon, and the council on anyone who upsets the ancient dragon. Understand?”
Yes and no.
Whispering as quietly as I could, I poked Daddy’s back and stepped closer. “Who are they talking about?”
Turning his head, I had to strain to hear his mostly mouthed words. “The dragon sitting in the corner is the oldest dragon on our planet. There are odd speculations anytime someone tries to confirm his age and lineage.”
Well, that was weird…even for us.
Before I could ask more questions, Agent Murphy nodded. “Thank you.”
There was no way they could behave, but he didn’t have a choice and had to pretend to believe them. We’d run out of time because I could see the old man waving us over as I peeked around Master.
“And then I’ll tell Kenzie you made an old man cry.” Agent Murphy’s well-delivered threat had shivers going through the group.
“That’s cheating.” Beatrice giggled, making her attempt at complaining completely unbelievable and got her a glare from Agent Murphy. “We’ll behave.”
Agent Murphy looked at her like she was insane if she thought he was going to believe her. “Let’s go.”
I’d have rather not because everyone in the room was watching us, but it seemed like I didn’t have a choice because we all moved forward to follow Agent Murphy.
“He’s probably just curious and wants to meet the people of Earth.” Klynn was trying to be quiet and logical, but no one believed him. “From what I was told, he likes telling stories, so I think you will enjoy speaking with him.”
Hopefully?
Wait.
He had stories?
“We haven’t screwed up yet, so I’m sure it will be fine. Do we know if he’s been given English?” Agent Murphy sounded very confident as the older dragon nodded.
