“Bonds…bonds move at their own pace.” Raxius gave words I had been thinking but he made them sound reasonable. “We just met, so there is no rush.”

Yes.

No rush.

No rush for my mates to tell me I was annoying too.

No rush to ask me why I was so odd.

No rush to ask me to leave so they could have quiet.

There was no rush to bond…every mating was different.

“Each bonding is unique.” Based on what Wren had said, the people of Earth liked being different, so I was glad when Shiloh smiled. “As is each of our schedules.”

I did my best to perform the sigh sound and frowned like Wren did when he wanted to please Toman. Shilo’s mouth twitched before he shook his head. “Don’t look so cute. That’s cheating.”

“It cannot be cheating if it made you smile.” I did the shrug movement which got a happy sound from him. “See?”

“I think you are teaching him to misbehave.” Raxius glanced between us, but his stern expression did not feel negative. Shiloh’s low laughter said he agreed with my assessment. “I refuse to participate in looking cute.”

I knew not to respond negatively to that before Shiloh peeked over at me. He nodded like I had done something correct and then smiled back at Raxius. “I don’t think you have a choice. I happen to have two very cute mates who are just different in their own ways.”

Yes, we were different.

Greatly so.

No.

Highly so?

I tried several more combinations before noticing my mates were staring at me. “English is distracting. I apologize.”

That got another laugh from Shiloh and made us almost appear as happy Earth mates. “It really is, but hopefully it will get easier in the long run.”

As we continued toward the meeting Shiloh was to attend, he asked questions about why we had not given them our original language. Our conversation went smoothly up until Shiloh approached the room and everyone of Earth turned to look at us.

He stopped talking.

Looking as if he had trouble swallowing, our Earth mate glanced between us and hurried over to take his place in a circle of leaders grouped to understand the changes our people had gone through regarding blending in physically with humans. I still maintained a lack of efficiency and high levels of frustration, but I left our mate with several other Earthlings and walked away from the room.

Raxius walked beside me, giving signs of thinking about something. Part of me wanted to turn away but we now had the shared responsibility of tending our submissive mate. That meant I had to listen to whatever rude idea he was going to present. “How do we shift the conversations from practical topics to ones he would like to avoid?”

He was going to ask smart questions just to frustrate me.

“I have been thinking about that as well.” I was not going to let him forget I was smart as well. “It seems like our mate is more comfortable discussing practical issues. But I feel that is a place to begin.”

I just wasn’t sure if we could call it a good beginning.

“My first thoughts were to move us slowly to more difficult topics, but I do not understand why they are difficult.” Raxius was good to have us discuss this problem away from Shiloh, but he was rude for making me admit a lack of knowledge. “It seems as if some people of Earth speak very openly about their needs, but others are very…hesitant.”

English was difficult but I continued to practice it even away from Shiloh, so I would improve and please him. It also gave us an additional layer of privacy I thought Raxius understood given the way he was watching those that passed us in the hall.

“I think hesitant is a good word for our mate.” Raxius was careful with his tone and made it impossible to know if he was praising me seriously or not. “I also have to agree that I do not understand why they are difficult topics for him. If he participates in the human bonding rituals for submissives, he should be able to explain his needs.”

“I agree. We are his mates.” The words felt like they needed a qualifier to show I was not positive about how that would affect the situation. If Shiloh had been with us, I would have shrugged. It was a good movement. “He understands that is an important role. The others of Earth explained they saw the mate bond in the same way we did.”

There was no question about that.
