Legends and Longing

“So that means he’s supposed to balance you and the professor out.” Hugh’s gentle tone was meant to relax me and it was working more than I wanted to admit.

Because then I’d have to figure out what to do next.

“Professor Zorin seems like he’s got a lot on his mind.” He really had gotten a lot dumped on him at once even if he’d been too startled to feel our faint bond on top of it all. “What…what do you think I should do?”

Leave him alone probably, but Hugh was too nice for that.

Somehow.

Maybe meeting aliens had mellowed him out a bit?

“I’m not sure you’re the take-charge type.” He pressed his lips together again when I laughed quietly. “Assuming that, I think putting yourself in their line of sight and moving closer to them will go a long way in letting the next steps play out.”

Move closer.

Let them see me.

Maybe talking to my mates wasn’t going to be necessary?

“Since you haven’t given me any pushback with that plan, we’re going to move around to the side and put you in Grumpy’s line of sight.” Hugh ignored my giggle even though that had been his goal. “Depending on his reactions, I’ll either let you handle the situation or I’ll bring Toman and Wren over to help with the explanations.”

Toman and Wren.

Yes.

“They’re…they’re comfortable talking about…things.” BDSM things. Toman had been incredibly patient explaining it over and over to Professor Zorin. “That might be helpful.”

It’d be awkward, though.

Wren was so outgoing and open, I’d look even more shy and pathetic next to him.

“I’m not going to voice my opinion on that.” Hugh’s tone was dry but his eyes sparkled with mischief as he moved to stand beside me. “I’ve been told to work on my manners.”

By who?

By whom?

Giving English to other people made me realize how bad mine probably was, but it didn’t matter at the moment.

“I think you’re nice.” Surprisingly so. “Thank you for your help.”

“You’re welcome.” Giving his head a slight nod, Hugh gestured toward Toman and the grumpy-looking man. I’d hoped he would’ve given me at least a hint about his personality at this point, but they really didn’t do that.

Wren had basically said that personalities were for their mates and no one else. That was nice in a romance novel sense but it was stressful in real life. Hugh knew that too. “Let me know if you need us to leave and go…somewhere else for you to think.”

For me to stop panicking.

“I can do this.” Hopefully. “Mates are always compatible.”

Mates were always compatible.

Mates were always compatible.

Mates were always compatible.

Playing the words over and over in my head, I somehow managed to follow Hugh to the edge of the crowd where my mates could see me better. The professor’s behavior didn’t change much but he might’ve started moving closer.

My grumpy mate on the other hand blinked and shifted side to side slightly. It didn’t mean much to me but Toman stopped what he was saying. Whatever he said to Wren must’ve been interesting because the bouncy sub started looking around like Santa had just walked into the room.
