Trick gives me an exasperated and slightly wide-eyed look, while Pete just shakes his head at me.
I mean, it’s fair. I could have stabbed myself. Again.
Everyone climbs into the cars, and I say a silent goodbye to the town. I really do hope that we can come back one day, and not just because I want to visit that store again and ask Marcel how he knew we were agents.
It really is lovely here.
We drive through the town and past a small neighborhood until we end up on the main road leading to the airport.
“Hang on,” Jensen says as he sits up straighter and looks out of his window. “Slow down, Trick, and pull up next to that green sedan?”
“On it,” Trick replies. Doing exactly as Jensen has asked.
We’re all looking out the window as Trick pulls up to the car because we’re all curious and want to know what Jensen has spotted.
“Fuck, is that Linda?” Rafe exclaims, shock in his tone.
“I thought so,” Jensen says.
Before we can make a plan of action or do anything at all, she looks over at us. She frowns slightly, not having seen any of the guys for a long time, and then, as realization hits, she immediately swerves the car into the side of ours, and Trick has to fight to get it back under control and stop us from going off the road.
Thank god the road is really quiet, and this place is so small. She would be a serious danger to other people if there were more cars on the road.
“Call the other car, and fill them in,” Trick orders as he puts his foot down and chases after her. “She’s heading toward the airport. That’s the only thing in this direction.”
“We can’t let her get on a plane,” I say, stating the obvious. “Fuck knows where she’s going. The last thing we need is for her to be there when Liam has his meeting. It could throw everything off, and it's a complication that we don’t need.”
“Agreed,” Trick says and then curses. “Gun.”
“She’s fucking shooting at us?” Riot exclaims in shock.
“The guys in the other car are going to come up on the other side, and we’re going to try to block her in and force her to stop,” Rafe says, his phone in his hands.
“Don’t let them do that,” Trick responds immediately. “She’s got a gun. She’s either hesitating about shooting us or can’t work out how to shoot and still escape us. We don’t want to risk forcing her hand.”
“Got it,” Atlas says over the phone, Rafe having put the phone on speaker. Atlas asks, “What’s the plan?”
“I’m going to try to nudge the back of the car to have her spin out,” Trick says. “If I’m successful, we need to take shelter at once and prepare to return fire. Hopefully it won’t come to that.”
“Yes, boss,” we all reply.
Trick looks at us briefly. “Brace yourselves.”
We all hold on.
This isn’t the first time that we’ve been in this situation, and it won’t be the last. We’ve all been extensively trained in these kinds of things, but Trick is by far our best driver.
Trick lines it up, catching up to her and following her as she weaves and snakes across the road haphazardly. The good news is that she’s completely abandoned the gun, deciding to focus entirely on driving and trying to get away from us.
As Trick said, the only thing this way apart from trees is the airport. She’s going to have to stop when she gets there, so I don’t know what her plan is then. We can’t let her get there, not only because we can’t risk her escaping, but also because we can’t risk her opening fire on us and a civilian being in the crosshairs.
We need to end this before we get there.
Trick clips the back of her car. Enough that it knocks the back end and she would struggle to correct it, but not enough that it’s going to cause the car to roll.
Trick slows down as the car spins and then stops sideways. We all exit the cars, guns drawn, and the doors left open in order to shield us. The other car pulls up and does the same.
Trick takes the lead, of course, and shouts the usual thing we’re required to say, you are under arrest. Show me your hands, that kind of thing. This has quickly turned into us having to take Linda back home and hand her over to the organization. I just need to make sure that she stays far away from Luc.
