Knot Cursed

I started pacing as I explained. “I found a mirror at the bazaar today. I was looking into it when Rook came over and it started to light up and show me a vision. Someone shot you. Rook burst in and saw it, too, and then we rushed over.”

My pacing came to a halt as he stepped forward and I was hit with his scent. Sugared pecans, maple, and rich buttery pastry.

“It was you,” I said on a whisper, eyes tracking over him. “At the drink shop. I scented you and you ran.”

“I’m not good in crowds,” he said with a shrug. He didn’t deny it, either.

“Wait, you’re matches?” Rook asked. I nodded my head as the shifter’s eyes flickered past us then he was moving faster than should be possible. One second, I was standing there and the next, a big wolf knocked both of us down as a bullet whizzed overhead.

Rook reached out and dragged me and him around the corner as the wolf burst through the door, snarling and eyes more vibrant than before.

“No,” I breathed out, terrified that he’d get hurt. Another shot had me jolting in Rook’s arms. He held me tighter but didn’t reassure me. I could feel his heart thudding against my ear.

On the third shot, Rook came back to his senses and pulled out his phone, dialing the emergency line.

“Gunshots,” he said, before giving Dorian’s address. When he hung up he looked down, eyes wide. “Don’t mention the mirror yet.”

“Okay,” I said, putting my trust in the alpha. I was too terrified to give that story again anyway.

The padding of paws cut off anything else I was going to say and I threw myself out of Rook’s arms, ready to check on the wolf. He moved closer, muzzle nudging me as if checking if I was okay.

“I’m fine. Did you get shot? Are you alright?” My hands were frantically roaming over his fur and he let out a huff that I took to mean he was fine. My cheeks burned as I realized what I was doing. “Fuck. Sorry.”

“Can you grab her a shirt before the guards get here? I don’t want anyone else looking at her in these shorts,” he said, rushing upstairs. He was back in record time holding a dark green hoodie. He tugged it over my head and I breathed in the potent scent of my latest scent-match.

We didn’t have to wait long before several guards were at the door. I looked up in time to recognize a few faces. Simon, one of the day guards, looked right at me.

“I should have known we’d find you here.”

“She wasn’t the one shooting,” Rook growled, making Simon take a step back and raise his hands.

Just this once, as I shifted back, my self control held. If it hadn’t then that lawman would have had his neck ripped out for that comment.

The silver from the wound to my shoulder stung but nothing was more important than her.

My mate.

”What do you mean by that? This is a town of curses, of course there’s going to be trouble. Someone shot at us and the first thing in your brain is that she’s the one responsible for this mess,” I growled.

Prue placed her small hand on my forearm and a sense of warmth spread through me.

“Deputy Simon, I would appreciate it if you were to do your job, not just throw around accusations,” a shorter, rounder man said as he barely inched his belly in the door frame.

Too many donuts, that’s my guess.

As he stepped up closer, there were a few sprinkles on his uniform shirt and I had to stifle a laugh. I was right.

“Sheriff Dave, it’s Prue. She was the one that set the chickens on the town,” he started. As if chickens equated to violence and attempted murder of multiple citizens. One of which was the woman he accused.

The sheriff held up a hand and stopped him from speaking, "She may be the center of some of the more… interesting issues in this town, but they’re all sent here for a reason. In fact, I'd be careful about crossing her, Prue’s curse has no rhyme or reason."

When he finished, the sheriff gave Prue a wink. My alpha didn't like that but she let out a soft laugh of relief.

"I apologize for my deputy. Now, Prue. Can you tell me what happened here?" he asked my mate.

I let out a growl that turned into a cough and my face went red with embarrassment.

"Hair ball?" Prue asked me with a smirk.
