The Academy of Blood & Shadow

"Why leave the beginning?"

"Because the beginning proves nothing."

I look at Ilara's ordinary entries. The stolen pastries. The homesickness. The frightened first-year trying to convince herself everything is manageable. "What happened to her?" Rhyven searches the catalogue. Her name appears in a later casualty list. No cause recorded. Only: Unrecovered. I close my eyes briefly. Not recovered. Not confirmed dead. Simply gone.

We search for another hour. Every useful thread ends the same way. A missing attachment. A damaged index. A reference to a report that is not where it should be. Not enough to prove a coordinated effort. Too much to call coincidence.

Rhyven finds three architectural records referencing the Hall of Dominion. Two have whole sections removed. The third directs readers to a volume that does not appear in the catalogue.

I find the title listed only once in a handwritten cross-reference. Observations on the First Silence and the Subterranean Anchors. No author. No date. Only a shelf number. We follow it to the deepest aisle. The shelf is almost empty. Six large spaces divide ancient volumes. At the center is a gap exactly wide enough for the missing work. I check the catalogue plate attached to the wood. The number remains. The title does not. Someone carved through it with a blade. Deeply enough to splinter the wood. The violence of it feels different from simple removal. Not an effort to hide that something belonged there. An effort to erase the words themselves.

Rhyven runs one thumb near the damaged plate without touching the cut. "This was deliberate."

The obviousness of the answer makes my voice quieter. "Someone wanted the book gone."

"No." He looks toward the empty space. "They wanted the subject gone."

We stand in silence. The archive stretches around us. Evidence of a war no one fully understands. Testimonies copied without conclusions. Maps altered after the fact. A student's final words cut from her journal. All preserved beneath an Academy that teaches us history is what survives being told. Professor Aldren was right. He simply did not mention that sometimes survival is decided with a knife.

"Do we take the journal?" I ask.

Rhyven looks toward the catalogue. "Professor Neris asked for records."

"She did."

"The archive will register removal."

"Then we don't remove it." I pull my notebook closer. "We copy everything." He nods. No argument. For the next several minutes, we work without speaking.

I copy Ilara's final surviving entries exactly. Rhyven sketches the old map and marks the sealed halls beneath Dominion. We record the missing catalogue numbers. The scraped labels. The dates. Not conclusions. Evidence.

When we finish, Rhyven closes the copied journal and returns it to the cabinet precisely where we found it. The empty shelf remains empty. There is nothing we can do about that tonight. The lamps dim at midnight. Not extinguishing. Warning us that our scheduled access is ending. Rhyven rolls the maps and returns them to their cases. I close the final catalogue. The sound echoes farther than it should. "Did we learn anything?" I ask.

He looks toward the aisles. "That the incidents happened before."

"We knew that."

"That they happened inside the Academy."

"Professor Neris suspected it."

"That the Academy was physically altered afterward." I glance toward the map cabinet. "And someone removed the records explaining why."

Rhyven picks up the lantern. "Exactly." Not an answer. A direction.

We walk toward the iron gate. At the threshold, I look back once. The Silent Archive remains still beneath its dim lamps. No shadows move. No wards flicker. Nothing follows us. The ordinary silence feels heavier now. Not because something supernatural waits among the shelves. Because someone living entered this place before us. Someone with access. Someone who knew exactly which pages mattered. Someone who decided we should never read them.

Rhyven locks the gate behind us. The six mechanisms seal one by one. As we begin climbing the long spiral stairs, I ask the question that has followed me since the missing journal. "Do you think the Council removed them?"

"I don't know." Rhyven answers.

"The Academy?"

"I don't know."

I look at him briefly. "Professor Neris?"

He looks at me over his shoulder. "No."
