I smirked into her pussy as I watched her stand on her toes, attempting to escape my assault on her sensitive clit. My hand met the small of her back, shoving her back down and biting on the sensitive bundle of nerves. Her yells of pleasure were music to my ears. A growl rumbled from my chest.

This was where I wanted to be, always—worshipping this fallen angel.

A visceral need to let her know, as much as I could, how I felt about her took over, and I pulled back, spinning her around.

Looking up at her from my knees, like a knight swearing his fealty to his queen, I whispered, “Say you’re mine, Ryan. Tell me that even when the world burns in chaos, you’ll trust me, baby.”

A moment of surprise flitted across her face. Like she hadn’t expected me to say those words. I didn’t miss the irony. So far, our whole relationship had been not getting what we expected, and that would more than likely be the way it ended.

But I would enjoy every part of this woman for as long as I could. She was beautiful, and it had nothing to do with her looks.

A soft smile appeared on her lips. “I’m yours, Gunner. I don’t know why you want my damaged soul, but I’m yours.”

Ryan

“Where the fuck are you taking me, Ryan?”

I let out a chuckle at the exasperated tone coming from Gunner. He was always so cranky when left out of the loop. In his defense, this was a sketchy-looking neighborhood I had us going to. The walls of the alley were covered in grime and stains that looked an awful lot like bloodstains. But the best places to hide were in areas like this. Areas no one wanted to go into for fear of the people who would have the balls to live there.

Intuition was something left over from our ancestors, a warning system Mother Nature put in place for the prey. And then there were people like Scar, the predators. She was the boogeyman of the slums she held safe houses in—the person setting off their alarm bells.

“Come on, the inside is much nicer than the outside. And you don’t have to worry. Everyone knows not to fuck with Scar’s section of the slums,” I called over my shoulder.

I still hadn’t let him in on who Scar was. She was complicated to explain, and it was better if he just met her. I ducked under a rotted two by four with a ratty blanket nailed to it. The makeshift curtain reeked of urine and scents I couldn’t begin to identify. All the trash was a security measure in itself. Scar didn’t even need the biometric scanner I knew she had on the smooth metal door in front of me. A camera positioned to capture everything was up in the corner of the small doorway. Scar could tell me how many chin hairs I needed to pluck with that thing.

“Seriously, Ryan. Where the fuck are we going, and how will anyone living in this shit hole be able to help with Mario?”

Before I could even answer, the door popped open with an audible whoosh, revealing a nondescript antechamber. I peeked back and smirked when I saw Gunner’s furrowed brow.

“What the fuck?” Gunner whispered under his breath. “I’m now guessing Scar is not some transient we are meeting in a sketchy back alleyway. Also, what the fuck kind of name is Scar?”

I cut Gunner a glare while letting out a harsh shh sound.

“Do not talk about her name. It’s a very touchy subject we will not get into before entering the Fort Knox of Tucson. A Fort Knox ran by the woman you are insulting,” I scolded.

Men. Do they ever think before they speak?

Scar took her security very seriously, and she was the best when it came to installing it, and she was the best at getting past it; what better person to sell security systems than the person who beat them? Of course, she didn’t tell any of her clients her side hustle was breaking and entering.

“Nothing I love more than fucking over rich men. I rob them blind in the middle of the night and then take their money when they hire me to keep their remaining shit safe.”

Scar had issues with the upper crust of New York, and she took every opportunity to fuck them over.

Gunner and I stepped into the antechamber. The slamming shut of the metal door caused Gunner to flinch slightly, bringing another smile to my face. I wasn’t going to tell him I let out an audible yelp the first time I was here. The moment the door sealed, a red light came on overhead.

“Seriously, Ryan?” he yelled, his arms wrapping around me, pistol drawn. My heart fluttered at the show of protection. Sure, I could handle myself, but the fact that Gunner would put himself in front of me filled me with an emotion I’d never experienced for a man. My hand patted the firm muscle of his bicep, and because I couldn’t help myself, I trailed my fingertips down his arm, tracing the inky lines. When he noticed I was calm, he tucked his Glock back into the waist of his jeans before grabbing my jaw.

“I swear, the moment we’re alone, I’m smacking that ass of yours until you can’t sit without being reminded of the consequences of not filling me in on this kind of shit. How do I keep you safe if I don’t know what the fuck’s going on?” he whispered.

His words made my heart and pussy flutter. Which was a first. Until Gunner, I didn’t even know my dead heart could feel enough to flutter.

Focus, bitch, unless you’re going to give Scar a show.

“Cálmate, Gunner. This room is like an at-home TSA checkpoint. We are being scanned for weapons, which, clearly, you have. And she’s probably running your face through her program to find out who you are. Scar’s a bit anal when it comes to this shit…” I said.

Gunner stiffened. I could understand; it was a lot, especially if you weren’t prepared for it.

“Don’t worry. She’ll let you keep your gun. She knows I always carry, and that I trust you if I told you about her.” His eyes locked on mine. “Not even Mario and Sergio know about Scar. I wouldn’t have brought you if I didn’t think I could trust you, Gunner,” I stated, the emotion in my voice taking me by surprise.
